For years, attackers had the advantage: they only had to find a single vulnerability, while Apple's security teams had to patch them all. But with the use of AI models like Claude and GPT, this balance of power is shifting dramatically - in favor of the defenders. For you as an iPhone and Mac user, that's good news, but it's not the whole story.
Because during this transition phase, criminals are also using the same tools. Deepfakes are becoming more convincing, phishing emails more error-free, and voices can be copied. What does this mean specifically for your iPhone, for your data - and how will it change your daily life? Below, we put this development into perspective and show why, despite all the AI advances at Apple, you are not off the hook.
The fundamental problem: Attackers only need to get lucky once
Modern software is enormous. The iPhone operating system iOS consists of tens of millions of lines of code, in addition to third-party libraries, interfaces to other systems, and constantly evolving features. In security research, all this code is referred to as the Attack Surface – the sum of all points where attackers could theoretically gain a foothold.
The dilemma: Apple's security researchers have to find and close all vulnerabilities. Attackers only need a single one that has been overlooked. This asymmetry is the reason why Apple releases security updates almost monthly – iOS 26.4, for example, closed over 35 security gaps at once. According to Apple, its lockdown mode has never been broken, but the race continues relentlessly.
All Apple could do so far was to continually raise the bar for attackers. Exploits were meant to become so complex and expensive that they would remain rare. Complete security was technically unrealistic – there were simply too few human security researchers for too much code.
How AI is changing the rules of the game
Modern AI models can now analyze code as well as specialized security researchers – only at a speed that a human could never achieve. A single model can examine thousands of source code files within a few days and recognize patterns that would escape even experienced experts.
A concrete example from recent weeks illustrates the scale of the problem: Mozilla used the Anthropic model Claude Opus 4.6 to scan the source code of the Firefox browser. In just two weeks, the AI found 22 genuine security vulnerabilities – 14 of them high-severity. This represents almost one-fifth of all critical Firefox vulnerabilities that will be patched in the entire year of 2025.
With its successor, Claude Mythos, the number jumped to dizzying heights: Firefox 150 contains fixes for 271 security vulnerabilities discovered using AI. This is no longer a gradual improvement, but a leap in quality. A single AI model finds more vulnerabilities in a few weeks than a highly specialized security team does in an entire year.
Incidentally, AI companies are also applying the same methods to the Linux kernel and other critical open-source projects – software that is in countless devices, including Apple's in the background.
Apple is part of "Project Glasswing"
Anthropic deliberately chose not to make this new Mythos model publicly available. The reason is obvious: a tool that could find hundreds of vulnerabilities within days would be devastating in the hands of criminals. Instead, since April 2026, a program called Project Glasswing has been running, granting early access to twelve launch partners: Apple, Google, Microsoft, Amazon Web Services, NVIDIA, Cisco, Broadcom, CrowdStrike, Palo Alto Networks, JPMorgan Chase, the Linux Foundation, and Anthropic itself. Anthropic has also granted access to over 40 other organizations that maintain critical open-source software and is investing a total of approximately $100 million in the program.
The goal is clear: Defenders should have the technology first so they can secure their software before comparable tools become more widely available. Apple is therefore using Mythos not only for iOS, but presumably also for macOS, Safari, WebKit, and the numerous libraries on which Apple's operating systems are built. We have already reported extensively on the specific collaboration between Apple and Anthropic.
Apple is not the only company relying on AI-powered security research – albeit with different approaches. While Anthropic has built a broad industry coalition with Project Glasswing, OpenAI is taking a different path with GPT-5.4-Cyber: The comparable model is not distributed via large tech partners, but directly to verified security researchers. Apple is not involved in this project.
The problem: Attackers also use AI
This is where things get uncomfortable. The same AI advancements that make Apple's job easier also help criminals. We're in a transitional phase where both sides are upping the ante – and the attacks you encounter as a user are becoming more sophisticated as a result.
Three forms of attack that have become more dangerous due to AI:
Deepfakes and cloned voices. Previously, a few seconds of audio were enough to roughly imitate a voice. Today, high-quality AI models and two or three sentences from a social media platform are sufficient to create convincing voice clones and deepfake videos. The classic grandparent scam has thus reached a new dimension.
AI-generated phishing. Previously, you could often recognize phishing emails by their awkward phrasing and spelling mistakes. Those days are over. AI-generated messages are error-free, personalized, and linguistically perfect. The classic warning sign of "unprofessional language" disappears.
Large-scale social engineering. Manipulative conversation techniques, in which perpetrators build trust, create time pressure, or feign authority, can be automated and personalized with AI. The number of attacks increases, and their quality improves.
What does that mean for you as an iPhone user?
The good news: Your iPhone and Mac will become significantly more secure on a technical level. Over the next six to twelve months, Apple's operating system updates are expected to contain more security fixes than ever before – potentially over 100 in a single update. Old software libraries that have harbored undetected risks for years will be systematically scanned and cleaned up. iOS 27 and macOS 27 are expected to be the first major operating systems to substantially benefit from this AI-powered review in the fall of 2026.
The uncomfortable truth: The human element is becoming the crucial point of attack. If your device is technically difficult to hack, attackers will be able to manipulate you more effectively to trick you into revealing passwords or installing malware. The better Apple's technical security measures, the more worthwhile it becomes for criminals to exploit your security.
What you should do specifically:
- Install updates promptly. Every security vulnerability that Apple closes is only closed if you actually install the update. With Background Security Improvements (since iOS 26.1, previously known as Rapid Security Response), Apple even delivers critical security patches between regular updates – this feature is enabled by default and should absolutely remain turned on.
- Use strong, unique passwords. The best firmware is useless if your iCloud password is "123456". A password manager like Apple's own or 1Password does all the work for you.
- Enable two-factor authentication. Even if one password is stolen, your account remains protected by the second factor.
- Remain skeptical of messages, calls, and emails, even if they are perfectly worded or sound like they come from a familiar voice. If in doubt, always call back via a known, official channel.
- Activate basic iPhone security features. Passcode lock, Face ID, iPhone theft protection, and iCloud Keychain are your basic protection.
Cybersecurity 2026: The two-part picture
We are heading towards an interesting paradox: Devices and software are becoming more secure than ever before. People are becoming more vulnerable than ever before. Defenders have the technological advantage, but attackers are resorting to social media – and that leads directly through you.
Apple is visibly investing in this development. Its lockdown mode record is flawless, iOS updates are becoming increasingly comprehensive, and the collaboration with Anthropic demonstrates that Apple has recognized the strategic value of AI-powered security research. Within the next one to two years, we should reach a point where most classic security vulnerabilities - buffer overflows, use-after-free bugs, race conditions - are largely eliminated.
Your personal safety remains in your hands.
The fact that your iPhone is becoming increasingly secure thanks to AI is a real relief. But it doesn't mean you can sit back and relax. The attack front is shifting – away from the hardware, towards you. The more robustly Apple secures its software, the more important strong passwords, vigilance against phishing attempts, and a healthy dose of skepticism towards unexpected calls and messages become.
The next Apple updates will take technical security to a new level. Whether you actually benefit from this depends on whether you install the updates – and whether you keep a cool head in the face of increasingly sophisticated human attacks.
