Why September 1st is crucial for Ternus' CEO start

Apple didn't choose the timing of John Ternus's CEO appointment by chance. September 1, 2026, is strategically ideal: Just a few days later, the most important event quarter of the year begins, the iPhone Ultra is immediately in the spotlight – and thanks to Mark Gurman, it becomes clear exactly why Ternus is chosen to present this product on stage.

When Apple changes CEOs, the timing is never accidental. Apple plans such transitions down to the month – and this also applies to the change from Tim Cook to John Ternus on September 1, 2026. The date is just a few days before the September event, Apple's most important event of the year. This is not a coincidence, but rather strategically orchestrated. Mark Gurman provides further details in the current Power On newsletter that reveal why this particular handover date was chosen.

Three factors make September 1st the perfect date: First, the September event with the first foldable iPhone; second, the start of the holiday quarter, Apple's most important sales period; and third, the strong product pipeline that Ternus is inheriting from Cook. All three together make for a picture-perfect start for the new CEO.

The September event as the perfect stage

The annual September event is always one of the most important Apple dates on the calendar. But this year will be special: Apple is expected to unveil the first foldable iPhone – a product that could shape the iPhone market for the next ten years.

By choosing September 1st as his start date as CEO, Apple deliberately ensured that Ternus could present this historic product as CEO. The handover could have taken place a few weeks later – but then Cook would have had to announce the foldable device as CEO. This gives Ternus a symbolically perfect start: his first major appearance in his new role coincides with the unveiling of the most ambitious new iPhone model since the original iPhone.

Ternus was the right man for the foldable anyway

But there's another practical reason. According to Gurman, Ternus personally oversaw the engineering and product development of the iPhone Ultra. This makes him the natural choice for the presentation on stage. Last year, Ternus already unveiled the iPhone Air – back then as head of hardware. He was also significantly more present in the accompanying interviews during the iPhone 17 launch week than in previous years.

That Apple now deliberately "wants to emphasize the idea that Ternus spearheaded this entire process," as Gurman writes, fits the strategy. Cook's departure is not surprising—he is handing over the reins to someone who personally shaped Apple's most prominent new product. This is classic Apple storytelling.

The holiday quarter as a tailwind

The second strategic advantage: Ternus assumes CEO responsibility just weeks before Apple's most important quarter. The holiday quarter begins at the end of September and encompasses both the iPhone launch and the Christmas season. It is traditionally Apple's strongest revenue quarter of the fiscal year.

Expectations for the current holiday quarter are particularly high. Analysts are forecasting revenue of around $150 billion – a new record. If this forecast proves accurate, Ternus's tenure as CEO will begin with one of the most successful quarters in Apple's history. This will give him momentum and credibility for his own strategic decisions later on.

A strong pipeline – like back then with Cook

In his newsletter, Gurman draws an interesting parallel to the Cook takeover in 2011. At that time, Cook inherited an extremely strong product lineup from Steve Jobs: the iPad 2 was fresh on the market, the iPhone 4S followed shortly after with Siri, and the following year brought the iPhone 5, iPad mini and the MacBook Pro with Retina display.

Ternus is taking over in a similarly favorable position. According to Gurman, the current iPhone lineup is "clearly the strongest yet," the MacBook family has just been completely revamped with new chips, and the MacBook Neo is selling better than Apple originally projected. Added to this are the new products Apple is planning – including Apple Glasses, AI AirPods, the HomePad, and more.

Why no other date would have been suitable

When you consider the alternatives, it becomes clear why Apple chose September 1st:

  • Early 2026 would have been too early – Cook wouldn't have been able to finalize the foldable design.
  • WWDC in June would have been symbolically attractive, but Ternus would have had to launch without new products.
  • October or later: Cook would have presented the September event as CEO, with Ternus in the background
  • Early 2027 would be too late – Apple didn't want to schedule the transition during peak sales season.

September 1st is the precise moment when the fiscal year ends (September 30th), the event timing coincides, and the foldable product launch coincides. Cook exits with a smooth quarterly close, while Ternus begins with its most prestigious product and strongest quarter yet.

What this means for Apple watchers

Those following the CEO transition should view the coming months primarily as a staged event. Cook will continue to act as CEO in the coming weeks and months, but will increasingly delegate appointments to Ternus. Ternus will make his first official appearance as CEO at the September event – possibly even with a key role in the foldable product presentation.

Also noteworthy is what happens after September 1st. Cook isn't retiring, but rather assuming the role of Executive Chairman. In this capacity, he will continue to advise Ternus, but will withdraw from day-to-day operations. This orderly transition is another hallmark of a long-term succession plan – very much in the Apple style.

Until then, September 1st remains firmly marked on the calendar. It will be the day Apple executes one of the most unusual and meticulously planned CEO change maneuvers in the tech industry. (Image: Shutterstock / jackpress)
