Tim Cook explains why he is stepping down as CEO now

At an employee meeting in the Steve Jobs Theater today, Tim Cook personally explained why he is stepping down as CEO at this particular time. He also firmly rejected speculation about health problems and outlined his vision for his time as Executive Chairman.

One day after the official announcement of the CEO change, Tim Cook and his designated successor, John Ternus, stood together on stage at the Steve Jobs Theater today – in front of the entire Apple workforce. As already revealed in the internal memo, both took the opportunity to answer employee questions. Bloomberg is now reporting details from the town hall – including Cook's personal explanation for the timing of the transition.

Cook, now 65, addressed the employees directly: He was healthy, had high energy, and planned to remain in his new role as Executive Chairman "for a long time." With this statement, he countered rumors that had been circulating for months linking his departure to possible health problems.

Cook denies health rumors

The rumors were undeniable. Bloomberg itself had reported in December that some Apple employees had noticed an "unexplained tremor" in Cook – his hands would occasionally shake. This observation had repeatedly fueled speculation that Cook might step down earlier than planned for health reasons.

Cook dismissed this interpretation today. He said he was healthy, his energy levels were high, and he was looking forward to his new role. The statement is important – both for the workforce, which now has more clarity, and for the stock markets, which traditionally react sensitively to health news from prominent CEOs.

The three prerequisites for switching

When asked why he was stepping down now, Cook cited three conditions that he felt had to be met:

First: Apple's product roadmap had to be "incredible". With products like the iPhone Ultra, the MacBook Ultra, and the Apple Glasses, Apple currently has one of the strongest product pipelines in years.

Secondly, Apple's finances must have been "excellent." Its market capitalization is over four trillion US dollars, and its annual revenue is 416 billion dollars. The company is financially healthier than ever before.

Third: Ternus had to be ready for the role. After 25 years at Apple and years of mentoring by Cook, that now appears to be the case.

The logic behind this is clear. Cook didn't want a hasty change during a crisis – but rather an orderly transition from a position of strength. This aligns with our assessment of the Cook successor test balloon that Apple launched via the Financial Times at the end of 2025.

Cook's role as executive chairman

In his new role, Cook intends to assume a very clearly defined function. He will support Ternus "whenever necessary" and make his knowledge and experience available as an advisor. A key focus will be dealing with political decision-makers worldwide.

Cook himself reportedly said, according to Bloomberg, that Apple remains his "top priority"—it's simply who he is "at his core," and he can't imagine it any other way. This phrasing makes it clear: Cook's transition from CEO to Executive Chairman is not a retirement. He remains closely connected to the company but is taking on a different role.

Cook also hinted that he would help "with some other things"—what exactly those would be remained unclear. Possible options include advising on key projects, mentoring other executive team members, or strategic initiatives at the board level.

What this means for Apple employees

The meeting was likely reassuring for the staff. Cook isn't disappearing – he remains present and accessible as Executive Chairman. At the same time, Ternus, someone who has been with Apple for 25 years and is personally known to many employees, is taking over. Continuity is thus doubly ensured.

Apple observers recognize a typical pattern in this presentation: The company always communicates important changes in a way that makes them appear as continuity – even if they are in reality strategically significant. Cook's three-part condition ("roadmap, finances, successor ready") sounds banal, but is actually a more polite way of saying: "Apple is better positioned than ever, and now is the perfect moment for an orderly transition."

September 1, 2026, remains the official deadline. Until then, Cook will remain CEO, working closely with Ternus and leading Apple through WWDC on June 8 – his last major Apple event as CEO. (Image: Shutterstock / Wulandari Wulandari)
