Apple CEO change: Internal memos from Cook and Ternus provide insight

Tim Cook and John Ternus sent internal memos to Apple employees in parallel with the official announcement of the CEO change. A town hall meeting is also planned for Tuesday at the Steve Jobs Theater, where both executives will address the workforce personally.

Following the official announcement of the CEO transition from Tim Cook to John Ternus and the personal community letter to Apple users, Apple has also communicated internally. Bloomberg has published two memos that Cook and Ternus sent to employees. In them, they discuss the upcoming change, announce a town hall meeting at the Steve Jobs Theater, and offer a rare glimpse into Apple's internal culture.

The memos are written in a much more personal style than the official press release. In them, Cook recalls the moment 15 years ago when Steve Jobs asked him to take on the CEO role. Ternus thanks his existing hardware engineering team and makes it clear that, despite his new responsibilities, he intends to remain "very hands-on." Both memos demonstrate that Apple is carefully orchestrating the transition—both internally and externally.

Cook's memo to Apple employees

In his internal memo, Cook recalls the moment 15 years ago when Steve Jobs asked him to take over as CEO. He hoped at the time that he was up to the responsibility – and knew that certain values define Apple, values that transcend any single individual. Cook lists these values: a belief in simplicity over complexity, a determination to focus on what truly matters, an impatience with anything that isn't excellent, and a commitment to enriching users' lives.

He justifies the timing of the change with Apple's current strength: The company has an "extraordinary roadmap," and he is more optimistic about the future than ever before. Therefore, now is the right moment for the transition to the new role of Executive Chairman. Cook also writes that he had many conversations with Ternus over the years about his eventual CEO role – an indication that the transition had been in preparation for some time.

Ternus' response to his team

Ternus also sent a memo to employees. The tone was deliberately different – less reflective, more future-oriented. Ternus thanked his hardware engineering team for their work and emphasized how privileged he felt leading the team.

Particularly revealing: Ternus makes it clear that despite his new CEO role, he intends to remain closely involved in day-to-day operations. He will continue to work "very hands-on"—a stark contrast to Cook's more strategic and diplomatic leadership style. This aligns with Ternus's background as an engineer: someone who, even as CEO, wants to keep the product in focus, not just the numbers.

Town Hall at the Steve Jobs Theater

Cook announced a town hall meeting for Tuesday morning at 9 a.m. local time in the Steve Jobs Theater. There, both executives will personally address the workforce and discuss the transition. The location is symbolic – the Steve Jobs Theater is Apple's main event venue and is otherwise primarily used for major product launches such as the WWDC keynote.

The fact that Apple is announcing the CEO change in precisely this setting underscores the historical significance of the moment. It will be one of Cook's few appearances as active CEO before the workforce before the transition is completed at the end of August.

What the memos reveal about the transition

The memos reveal several important aspects of the change. First, the transition has been planned for a long time. Cook explicitly mentions the many discussions with Ternus about his future role. Second, Apple is committed to maintaining its core values. Both Cook and Ternus emphasize the values that define Apple and assure everyone that nothing will change. Third, the new leadership style will be different. Ternus's emphasis on hands-on work signals a different leadership culture than under Cook.

For Apple employees and observers, this is an important message: the transition is not an abrupt break, but a carefully planned change. Cook will remain CEO until September and will then be available as Executive Chairman. Ternus is taking over, but with a clear connection to the existing culture.

Tuesday's town hall will reveal further details and give Apple employees the opportunity to ask questions directly to both executives. For Apple itself, it's the first real step into a new era, beginning even before WWDC in June. (Image: mrchv / DepositPhotos.com)
