At the employee meeting in the Steve Jobs Theater, John Ternus addressed the workforce for the first time as CEO-designate. His message: Apple has an "incredible roadmap" and is on the verge of new breakthroughs – primarily thanks to AI. It was the most exciting time developing products at Apple since he started there 25 years ago.
Following Tim Cook's announcement at the time of his resignation, his designated successor also addressed Apple employees at the same all-hands meeting. John Ternus's words were—in true Apple fashion—ambitious. Apple would "change the world again," Ternus promised. A statement that conveyed both confidence and pressure. Bloomberg has published details of the speech.
According to the report, Ternus spoke of an extraordinary moment for Apple. He was "particularly excited to step into this role at this moment" because Apple is currently facing major upheavals. Specifically, he cited upcoming products and especially AI as drivers of a new phase that will transform not only Apple, but the entire industry.
The roadmap as a basis
A central theme of Ternus's speech was the product pipeline. He described Apple's upcoming roadmap as "incredible" and said it was the most exciting phase for product development in his entire career at Apple. That's a powerful statement from someone who has been with the company since 2001 and worked under both Steve Jobs and Tim Cook.
The roadmap Ternus is referring to is indeed impressive. In the fall of 2026 alone, Apple plans to release around ten new products – including the iPhone 18 Pro, the foldable iPhone Ultra, two new Apple Watches, new AirPods Ultra with AI features, and a whole range of Apple Home products. In addition, there are the Apple Glasses, which are expected to be released at the end of 2026.
AI as a key driver
Ternus was particularly clear on the topic of AI. He spoke of the "virtually unlimited potential" that AI offers Apple. The company will continuously unlock new possibilities that will create entirely new opportunities for Apple's products and services.
This ties in with the story Bloomberg already reported today: Ternus introduced a new AI platform to Apple's hardware engineering organization in early April – even before officially taking office as CEO. The CEO-designate is therefore not just using AI as a rhetorical tool, but is actively working on its internal integration. This makes his statements to employees more credible – he's not just making promises, he's already taking action.
Typical Apple rhetoric
Of course, Ternus's words are "clearly hyperbolic." Phrases like "change the world again" or "incredible potential" are classic Silicon Valley vocabulary. Cook, during his time as CEO, also often spoke very emphatically about Apple's products and pipeline – in that respect, Ternus is following a familiar pattern.
What's always implied with Apple executives is that such statements aren't just for the public, but primarily for their own employees. Team morale is crucial during a transition. Ternus needs to show the workforce that he's convinced they can achieve great things together. This isn't empty rhetoric—it's leadership communication.
The moment of truth will come in September
The crucial factor will be how Ternus translates his words into concrete products. He officially takes over as CEO on September 1, 2026 – and just a few days later, the iPhone event takes place. That will reveal whether the "change the world" promise holds any substance.
The first test will be the iPhone Ultra – Apple's first foldable device. If the product impresses, Ternus's rhetoric will gain momentum. If the audience reacts with restraint, the comparison with the grand promises will quickly become uncomfortable. In any case, Ternus has raised expectations with his words – now he has to deliver.
For Apple fans, the speech is nonetheless a positive sign. Ternus communicates confidently, identifies AI as a central theme, and positions Apple as a company on the cusp of an exciting new phase. This is the kind of CEO communication that Wall Street appreciates—and that the Apple community also wants to see, especially after years of growing criticism of Apple's pace of innovation.
