The global notebook market faces a challenging year. Analysts expect declining sales figures, while at the same time the costs of key components such as memory and processors are rising. Many PC manufacturers are reacting cautiously: They are reducing their product portfolios and trying to minimize risks by keeping inventory levels lower.
Apple is currently pursuing a different strategy, however. With the new MacBook Neo, the company is launching a notebook deliberately positioned in the affordable entry-level segment. According to a report by the market research firm TrendForce, this model could significantly contribute to boosting Apple's notebook sales, even though the overall market is shrinking.
For many years, Apple maintained a clear pricing structure: MacBooks were almost exclusively positioned in the premium segment. An entry-level price below €1,000 was practically unheard of for new models.
With the MacBook Neo, this strategy changes significantly. Apple is seriously entering the mainstream segment between 500 and 800 euros for the first time. This is precisely the range occupied by many traditional Windows laptops and Chromebooks, which are primarily used in education and for everyday productivity tasks.
According to TrendForce, the new pricing strategy could not only increase Apple's market share, but also have an impact on pricing across the entire notebook market.
MacBook Neo launches significantly below the previous price point
Apple announced the MacBook Neo on Wednesday with a starting price of €699. The company is also offering a discount for the education sector, which reduces the price to €599.
This puts the device significantly below the price point of around 1,000 euros, which was typical for new MacBook models for many years.
With this price, Apple is strategically positioning the notebook in the mainstream segment between 500 and 800 euros. This market segment is traditionally dominated by Windows laptops and Chromebooks. Such devices are particularly common in schools, universities, and for general office and productivity tasks.
Forecast: MacBook Neo could significantly boost Apple's notebook sales
TrendForce predicts that Apple could benefit from the new model despite an overall weaker market. According to their analysis, Apple's notebook sales could increase by approximately 7.7 percent in 2026. At the same time, macOS's market share could grow to 13.2 percent.
A key factor in this forecast is the new entry-level model. TrendForce estimates that the MacBook Neo alone could sell between 4 and 5 million units.
This development would be remarkable, as it would go against the general trend in the notebook market.
Global notebook market expected to shrink significantly
While Apple sees growth potential, market analysts expect a significant decline for the entire notebook sector. TrendForce predicts that global notebook sales will fall by 9.2 percent in 2026 compared to the previous year. Should demand remain weak, the decline could be even steeper.
A key reason for this trend is the rising cost of essential hardware components. Memory chips and CPUs, in particular, have become significantly more expensive. This makes it difficult for manufacturers to produce affordable devices while maintaining their profit margins.

Apple's strategy differs from that of other manufacturers
In this situation, Apple is pursuing a different strategy than many traditional PC manufacturers. A key advantage lies in its in-house Apple silicon chips. Apple develops these processors itself, making it less dependent on external CPU suppliers. This allows the company to better control its hardware and plan costs more reliably.
Another factor is the standardized product specifications that Apple uses for its devices. Because many models operate with similar configurations, Apple can purchase larger quantities of individual components and thus negotiate better prices with suppliers.
In contrast, Windows OEM manufacturers often face more complex cost management. Their product portfolios are usually much more fragmented. Many different models and configurations make it difficult to react efficiently to fluctuating component prices.
RAM could play a crucial role
One potential point of discussion surrounding the MacBook Neo concerns its RAM configuration. The device ships with 8 GB of RAM as standard. According to a report by TrendForce, consumer reaction to this configuration could be a key factor in its market success.
Apple does not offer a RAM upgrade option for this model. This means that buyers must stick with the base configuration.
For typical tasks like web browsing, document editing, or streaming, this configuration should be sufficient. However, for users with higher performance requirements, the fixed memory configuration could be a potential disadvantage.
Market launch already on March 11th
The MacBook Neo is officially scheduled for release on Wednesday, March 11th. According to TrendForce, if Apple succeeds in establishing itself in the entry-level segment, the model could have a noticeable impact on the pricing structure of the global notebook market. A more affordable MacBook could increase competitive pressure on other manufacturers and, in the long run, lead to new pricing strategies.
