Apple Music introduces transparency tags for AI content

Artificial intelligence is playing an increasingly important role in music production. Songs, lyrics, cover artwork, and music videos can now be created partially or entirely using generative AI. This presents a new challenge for streaming platforms: it must be clearly identifiable when AI was involved in the creation of content.

Apple Music is responding to this development with new metadata tags. These tags will allow labels and distributors to disclose whether artificial intelligence was used in the production of music, artwork, or videos. The new requirements apply to content newly uploaded to the platform.

This measure is part of a first step by which Apple aims to create more transparency around AI-generated content.

Generative AI opens up new creative possibilities for the music industry. Tools can generate melodies, write lyrics, imitate voices, or create visual content for album covers and videos. At the same time, this raises new questions about copyright, creativity, and transparency.

Streaming services are therefore increasingly under pressure to disclose how their content is created. Apple is responding with a structured solution: new metadata tags within the Apple Music platform. These are intended to clearly indicate when a significant part of a piece of content was created using artificial intelligence.

The launch is primarily aimed at partners of the platform, i.e., record labels, distributors and other content providers who release music on Apple Music.

Apple requires AI transparency tags for new content

Apple communicated the new policy in an email to its partners. The email explains that transparency tags for AI content will be required when submitting new content to Apple Music.

The tags are to be used whenever artificial intelligence has been involved in significant creative elements of a digital music product. According to Apple, the new requirements apply specifically to the future delivery of new content on Apple Music.

The goal is to make it transparent in which areas of a release AI was used.

Four new metadata tags for AI-generated content

Apple is introducing a total of four different metadata tags. Each tag relates to a specific creative element of a music product.

This structure is intended to ensure that a clear distinction can be made as to whether AI was used, for example, only in the artwork or also in the music itself.

Artwork tag

The artwork tag is used when artificial intelligence has created a significant portion of an album's artwork. It doesn't matter whether it's a static image or animated graphics.

Both forms fall under this category. As soon as AI has played a significant role in the creation of the visual material, the corresponding tag must be set.

Track tag

The track tag refers to the audio recording of a song. It is used when AI has generated a significant portion of the audio recording.

This tag can only be used at the track level. This means that individual songs within an album can be tagged if AI was involved in creating the recording.

Composition tag

The composition tag is used when artificial intelligence has created a significant part of the musical composition. This includes, among other things:

  • Song lyrics
  • musical structures
  • other components of the composition

For example, if AI has generated a significant portion of the lyrics or other creative elements of the song, this tag should be used.

Music Video tag

The fourth tag concerns music videos. This day is set when AI has created a significant portion of a music video's visual content. This applies to both:

  • Music videos that are released alongside an album
  • standalone music videos

Multiple tags per content are possible

Apple explains that the new metadata tags must be used whenever a significant part of the content in question was created using artificial intelligence.

Multiple tags can be used simultaneously. For example, a song can have both a track tag and a composition tag if AI was involved in both the recording and the composition.

Partners decide for themselves what counts as AI content

An interesting aspect of the new policy concerns the definition of AI content. Apple is leaving it up to its platform partners to decide what exactly constitutes AI-generated content.

This approach aligns with Apple Music's existing handling of other metadata. Categories such as genres and credits are also managed and entered by partners themselves.

This leaves some room for interpretation when it comes to assessing when AI has generated a "substantial part" of content.

Part of a larger development in the music industry

Apple describes the new transparency tags as a first step towards creating more openness about AI-generated content.

The music industry is currently in a phase where generative technologies are increasingly being integrated into creative processes. Platforms must therefore find ways to make this development comprehensible and transparent.

In conjunction with the introduction of the new tags, Apple has also updated the Apple Music Package Specification document. This document outlines the technical requirements and guidelines for making content available on Apple Music.

Apple Music subscription and costs

An active subscription is required to use Apple Music. The streaming service costs €10.99 per month. New users can try the service free for one month before the regular subscription begins.

Apple Music is focusing on greater transparency in AI-generated content

With the new metadata tags, Apple Music is introducing a structured labeling system for AI-generated content. Labels and distributors will now be required to disclose if artificial intelligence played a significant role in the music, composition, artwork, or music videos.

The introduction of these transparency tags shows that streaming platforms are increasingly responding to the changes brought about by generative AI. While Apple continues to give its partners leeway in defining AI content, the new policy marks an important step toward greater transparency within the music industry. (Image: Apple / Apfelpatient)
