With the MacBook Neo, Apple introduces a new laptop designed to make the Mac platform accessible to significantly more people. The device combines a robust aluminum enclosure, a high-resolution 13-inch Liquid Retina display, the performance of the A18 Pro chip, and a battery life of up to 16 hours. At the same time, it offers the familiar macOS experience, Apple Intelligence, and tight integration with the iPhone.

With a starting price of €699, the MacBook Neo is the most affordable laptop Apple has ever released. The goal is clear: to make the typical Mac strengths, such as design, performance, and user-friendliness, available at a significantly lower price.

Apple describes the MacBook Neo as a laptop that offers the "magic of the Mac" at a particularly attractive price. According to John Ternus, Apple's senior vice president of hardware engineering, the device was completely redesigned to make the Mac world accessible to more people.

Despite the lower price, Apple hasn't compromised on key features of its devices. The MacBook Neo combines a premium aluminum design, powerful Apple Silicon technology, a bright display, high-quality audio and camera components, and the macOS Tahoe operating system. It also includes Apple intelligence features and comprehensive compatibility with third-party apps.

Design and housing made of aluminum

The MacBook Neo features an aluminum enclosure designed for stability and durability. Its rounded edges give the laptop a modern look while also ensuring a comfortable feel.

Weighing just 1.2 kilograms, the MacBook Neo is one of the most portable laptops. This makes it easy to carry in a backpack or bag and well-suited for use on the go, for example in the classroom, office, or café.

Apple offers the MacBook Neo in four colors: Blush, Indigo, Silver, and Citrus. These color options are also reflected in the Magic Keyboard, which is designed in a lighter shade for each color. Matching wallpapers complete the look, creating a cohesive design. Apple describes the MacBook Neo as its most colorful MacBook to date.

High-resolution Liquid Retina display

A key feature of the MacBook Neo is its 13-inch Liquid Retina display. It has a resolution of 2408 × 1506 pixels and a brightness of 500 nits. Additionally, the display supports one billion colors, making photos, videos, websites, and apps exceptionally vibrant.

The combination of high resolution and strong brightness ensures sharp text and detailed images. Compared to many PC laptops in the same price range, the display is both brighter and has a higher resolution.

An anti-reflective coating reduces reflections and ensures that content remains clearly visible even in varying lighting conditions. This makes the display suitable for a variety of tasks, from video calls and streaming to photo editing.

Performance with the A18 Pro chip

Inside the MacBook Neo is the A18 Pro, a chip from Apple's own Apple Silicon line. It enables fast and efficient execution of many everyday tasks, such as browsing the internet, writing documents, streaming content, and editing photos.

The chip also enables simultaneous use of various applications such as Messages, WhatsApp, Canva, Excel, or Safari. Switching between apps occurs without any noticeable delays.

According to Apple, the MacBook Neo is up to 50 percent faster than the best-selling PC with the latest Intel Core Ultra 5 for everyday tasks. For AI workloads directly on the device, the system can even be up to three times faster. For tasks like photo editing, a performance increase of up to two times is possible.

For graphics tasks, an integrated 5-core GPU ensures smooth rendering of graphics in games or creative applications. This is complemented by a 16-core neural engine, specifically designed for AI calculations.

This Neural Engine enables Apple Intelligence features, such as automatically summarizing notes in apps like Bear or using the cleanup tool in the Photos app. Because these functions run directly on the device, user data remains protected.

Another feature is the fanless design of the MacBook Neo. This makes the laptop completely silent.

All-day battery life

The energy efficiency of the Apple Silicon chip ensures that the MacBook Neo achieves a battery life of up to 16 hours. This allows the laptop to be used throughout an entire workday without needing to be recharged.

This long battery life makes the device particularly practical for mobile use. Whether in the classroom, in a café, or on the go – a single charge is often sufficient for an entire day.

Magic Keyboard and large trackpad

The MacBook Neo is equipped with Apple's familiar Magic Keyboard. The keyboard is designed for comfortable and precise typing and is also suitable for extended writing sessions.

It is complemented by a large multi-touch trackpad that enables precise control. Users can click anywhere on the surface and use various gestures, such as scrolling, zooming, or navigating between apps.

The MacBook Neo also supports Touch ID, allowing for quick and secure unlocking. Purchases made with Apple Pay can also be confirmed via fingerprint.

Camera, microphones and speakers

For video conferencing and multimedia, the MacBook Neo offers several integrated audio and video components. The 1080p FaceTime HD camera uses optimized image processing to deliver a clear picture during video calls.

Two microphones with directional beamforming reduce background noise and focus on the voice. This ensures that speech remains easily understandable even in noisy environments.

The sound is provided by two side-facing speakers that support Spatial Audio and Dolby Atmos. This creates a spatial sound that is particularly noticeable with movies, music, or creative applications.

Ports and wireless connections

When it comes to connectivity, Apple relies on modern standards. The MacBook Neo has two USB-C ports for connecting accessories or external displays. Both ports can also be used to charge the device.

Additionally, the laptop has a headphone jack, allowing wired audio devices to be connected.

For wireless connections, the MacBook Neo supports Wi-Fi 6E, enabling fast Wi-Fi connections. It also features integrated Bluetooth 6, allowing for reliable connections to accessories and peripherals.

Sustainability and environmental aspects

Apple designed the MacBook Neo with environmental friendliness in mind. The device is intended to be the MacBook with the lowest carbon footprint to date and is part of the goal to become carbon neutral across the entire supply chain by 2030.

The MacBook Neo is made from 60 percent recycled materials, the highest percentage of any Apple product. This includes 90 percent recycled aluminum in the casing and 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery.

The housing is manufactured using a special forming process that requires 50 percent less aluminum than conventional methods. Furthermore, the device is produced using 45 percent renewable energy in its supply chain, including wind and solar power.

The packaging was also designed sustainably. It consists entirely of paper fibers and can be easily recycled.

Price and availability

The MacBook Neo is now available for pre-order via the Apple website and the Apple Store app in a total of 30 countries and regions, including Germany.

Shipping begins on Wednesday, March 11. From this point on, the device will also be available in Apple Stores and at authorized Apple resellers.

The starting price is €699. The device is available in the colors Blush, Indigo, Silver, and Citrus.

MacBook Neo combines performance, design, and low price

With the MacBook Neo, Apple expands its laptop portfolio with a model that combines high-quality technology at a significantly lower price. The device combines a lightweight aluminum design, a bright Liquid Retina display, the powerful A18 Pro chip, and a battery life of up to 16 hours.

Together with macOS Tahoe, Apple Intelligence, modern connectivity, and tight integration with the iPhone, the result is a laptop that brings many typical Mac features to a more affordable package. This positions the MacBook Neo as a new entry point into the Mac world and as the most affordable laptop in Apple's lineup to date. (Image: Apple)
