With the iPhone 17e, Apple has introduced the next generation of its more budget-friendly, Apple Intelligence-enabled smartphones. As is often the case, it's not just about new technology, but also about very practical questions. One of these quickly arises: Can the existing iPhone 16e case still be used, or is new accessory required?
When a new iPhone is released, many conversations surprisingly quickly shift away from processors or display brightness and towards everyday questions. Does the old case still fit? Are the buttons in the same place? Are the dimensions correct? These points are particularly relevant with the iPhone 17e because, although Apple has presented a new model, the external appearance hardly seems changed at first glance.
The design of the iPhone 17e compared to the iPhone 16e
A direct comparison reveals just how similar the iPhone 16e and iPhone 17e are. The placement of the single rear camera is identical. The volume buttons, power button, and action button are also located in exactly the same positions. This is crucial for phone cases, as even minimal shifts would cause cutouts to no longer align.
The notch also remains. It's the same size on the iPhone 17e as on its predecessor. This suggests that Apple hasn't changed the basic case design.
The dimensions make it even clearer. Both models are 146.7 millimeters high, 71.5 millimeters wide, and 7.8 millimeters thick. If the height, width, and thickness are identical and all controls remain in the same position, from a technical standpoint, almost everything points to complete case compatibility.
The only physical difference
The only measurable difference between the two devices is their weight. The iPhone 17e weighs two grams more than the iPhone 16e. Two grams is roughly the weight of two paperclips. This difference is barely noticeable in everyday use and has no effect on the fit of a case.
In practice, the iPhone 17e therefore feels like almost the same device, which has been slightly revised internally but remains unchanged externally.
MagSafe as a possible decision factor
One point that might still argue in favor of a new case is MagSafe. The iPhone 17e has MagSafe. This means that magnetic accessories such as chargers or other compatible products can be used.
Anyone who wants to actively use MagSafe should opt for a compatible case that supports this feature. An older iPhone 16e case without integrated magnets wouldn't offer this option. However, if MagSafe isn't important to you, there's no compelling reason to upgrade.
New cases for the iPhone 17e
Apple is offering new silicone cases with MagSafe for the iPhone 17e. They are available in Soft Pink, Bright Guava, Vanilla, Light Moss, Anchor Blue, and Black. The price is €59 per case. This makes them particularly appealing to users who want to fully utilize the MagSafe functionality or simply prefer a new color option.
Still available: Cases for the iPhone 16e
At the same time, the iPhone 16e cases remain in the product range. These are available in Neon Yellow, Fuchsia, White, Black, Winter Blue, and Lake Green, and cost €45 each. Those who don't need MagSafe or prefer one of these colors can still purchase them.
Almost identical: iPhone 17e and iPhone 16e compared
The iPhone 17e is virtually indistinguishable from the iPhone 16e in appearance. Dimensions, button positions, camera arrangement, and notch remain identical. The only physical difference is a minimal weight increase of two grams, which is practically negligible.
Therefore, it can be assumed that an existing iPhone 16e case will also fit the iPhone 17e. A change is primarily advisable if you want to use MagSafe or one of the new color options. Otherwise, there's no technical reason not to continue using your existing case. (Image: Apple / Apfelpatient)
