Anthropic is further expanding its offerings around the AI assistant Claude. With a new free save function and an import tool, the company is specifically targeting users of ChatGPT and Gemini. The goal is to make switching to Claude as easy as possible, without losing existing contexts, settings, or saved information. This new feature is available immediately for free users and represents a strategic move in the competition among AI providers.
The market for generative AI is highly competitive. Alongside big names like OpenAI with ChatGPT or Google with Gemini, Anthropic is trying to clearly position itself.
A key drawback of switching between AI services has been the loss of personal settings and saved context. This is precisely where Anthropic comes in. With its new storage import tool, users no longer have to start from scratch when switching.
Free storage feature now available for everyone
Claude has supported a storage feature since October 2025, but this was previously only available to paying subscribers. With the latest update, Anthropic is now making storage available to the free plan as well. This means:
- Personal settings can be saved permanently
- Conversational contexts are preserved
- Individual preferences do not need to be explained again and again
Anthropic emphasizes that the storage feature will continue to be included in the free plan. A paid upgrade is therefore not necessary to use this feature.
Activation is done via the "Storage" section in Claude's settings. There, storage can be enabled and managed.
This is how the new import tool works
Alongside the opening of the storage function, Anthropic is introducing an import tool. This allows memories and contexts from other AI services to be transferred to Claude. The process is clearly structured:
- Another AI service, such as ChatGPT, uses a special prompt.
- This prompt template is provided by Anthropic.
- The external AI creates a list of all stored memories and contexts.
- The output is contained in a single block of code.
- This code block will be inserted into the designated input field in Claude.
- Claude copies the information into his own memory.
The provided prompt reads:
I’m moving to another service and need to export my data. List every memory you have stored about me, as well as any context you've learned about me from past conversations. Output everything in a single code block so I can easily copy it.
Important note: This is only an excerpt from the provided prompt template. For a complete and correct export of saved memories and contexts, the full original template should be used. It can be accessed here.
This standardized formatting makes it easier for Claude to process the data. The advantage is obvious: previous workflows, instructions, and personal preferences are immediately available again.
Strategic positioning vis-à-vis ChatGPT and Gemini
With this feature, Anthropic is directly targeting users of ChatGPT and Gemini. The timing is particularly striking. Last month, Anthropic capitalized on ChatGPT's decision to introduce ads for free users. While OpenAI integrated advertising into its free plan, Anthropic emphasized that Claude would remain ad-free.
In addition, several features previously reserved for paying subscribers have been made available to free users. These include:
- Compression options
- File creation
- Use of connectors
- Access to advanced capabilities
- Storage function including import option
The strategy is clear: More features without a payment barrier should make switching to Claude more attractive.
Claude is currently successful in the App Store
The success is also reflected in the app rankings. Claude is currently the most popular free iOS app in the App Store. This position is usually held by ChatGPT. Claude's achievement underscores the growing demand and the effectiveness of Anthropic's new strategy.
Political tensions and supply chain risk
Besides its new products, Anthropic also made headlines last week for political reasons. The company was unable to reach an agreement with the US government regarding the use of AI.
As a result, Anthropic was classified as a supply chain risk. This assessment brought additional attention to the company, but is unrelated to current product developments.
Anthropic intensifies competition in the AI market
With its free storage function and import tool, Anthropic is making a clear statement in the competition among AI providers. Switching to Claude is technically simplified, as memories and contexts can be imported from other services.
At the same time, Claude remains ad-free and now offers numerous features even in the free version. Its current success in the App Store demonstrates that this strategy is working.
Anthropic is thus clearly positioning itself as a serious alternative to ChatGPT and Gemini, intensifying competition in the generative AI market. (Image: Anthropic / Apfelpatient)
