Apple Watch Ultra 4: Complete redesign and major sensor leap expected

Apple Watch Ultra 4 Redesign

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is expected to bring not just a few minor tweaks this fall, but a completely redesigned look – combined with a significant expansion of its sensor capabilities. A new report from Asia even quantifies Apple's expectations: up to 30 percent more shipments.

For a long time, there was little news about the next generation of Apple's top-of-the-line model. Initial reports from the summer of 2025 mentioned design adjustments, twice as many sensors, and significantly improved energy efficiency. Since then, there have been hardly any new details – until now. The Taiwanese industry publication Digitimes has injected fresh energy into the rumor mill, highlighting two key aspects of the Apple Watch Ultra 4: a "complete redesign" and a substantial sensor upgrade. Market expectations are high, and Apple is positioning the Ultra series alongside other new premium models like the iPhone Ultra and MacBook Ultra – an indication that the "Ultra" brand is being strategically expanded across the entire product range. Anyone wanting a comprehensive overview of the current state of speculation surrounding the next Apple Watch generation can find it in the ongoing compilation of all rumors about the Apple Watch Ultra 4.

What the report specifically says

Siu Han's Digitimes report identifies two key expectations for the Apple Watch Ultra 4 in the second half of 2026: a complete redesign and a significant upgrade to its sensor capabilities. Both points explicitly refer to the high-end update of the Apple Watch lineup – clearly the Ultra model, not the concurrently expected Apple Watch Series 12.

The report doesn't provide specific design details. However, the phrase "full redesign" suggests that Apple is going further than with previous Ultra generations. The Ultra 2 primarily introduced the S9 chip and brightness upgrades, while the Ultra 3 added satellite connectivity and 5G – the casing itself remained largely unchanged across three generations. A true redesign would be the first major form change since its debut in 2022.

What's behind the sensor jump

The second key point – the sensor expansion – is relevant both technically and economically. According to reports, Apple's exclusive sensor supplier, Taiwan-Asia Semiconductor (TASC), will be among the main beneficiaries of the new model. Large-volume orders are expected to begin as early as July, roughly two months before the anticipated market launch. This procurement cycle is typical for Apple products: when a supplier receives a large order, it's a reliable signal that production is entering its final phase.

The report doesn't specify which sensors will be added. However, previous reports paint a picture of a model with significantly expanded health sensors – meaning functions that go beyond existing standards like heart rate monitoring, ECG, and blood oxygen. On the same day as the Ultra 4 announcement, it was revealed that Apple had submitted a new hypertension feature for the Apple Watch to the FDA for review – a first concrete indication of the potential focus of the expanded sensors. The recent legal ruling in the sensor dispute underscored just how important the health sector has become for the company: In the spring, the US import ban on the Apple Watch was lifted in the case against Masimo, giving Apple leeway to implement further medically certified features.

The 20 to 30 percent expectation

Perhaps the most intriguing figure from the report: Market observers expect the redesign to increase shipments of the Apple Watch Ultra 4 by 20 to 30 percent compared to the previous year. That's a significant figure for a premium model that is already the market leader in its price segment.

There's a fairly simple logic behind this expectation. Buyers of previous Ultra generations often forgo an annual upgrade because the design leaps were lacking and the feature gains were rather incremental. A true redesign changes this behavior – those who bought their first Ultra in 2022 have a clear reason to upgrade. In addition, there are new customers who are more easily persuaded by a generational change with a significantly new look.

Where the Ultra 4 fits into Apple's Ultra strategy

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 is just one of several premium products that Apple plans to launch this fall under the "Ultra" label. The iPhone Ultra, the MacBook Ultra, and presumably the AirPods Ultra are expected to follow. The new Mac Studio with the M5 Ultra completes the lineup at the top end. This suggests that Apple intends to establish the term "Ultra" as a second premium tier above the Pro series – a clear marketing signal that the Apple Watch Ultra 4 perfectly complements in terms of timing.

For the Apple Watch specifically, this means that the Ultra line will be more clearly differentiated from the Series. While the Series models receive more incremental updates and cater to a broad audience, the Ultra line is consistently geared towards outdoor and health professionals. The Apple Watch Series 12, expected at the same time, will accordingly continue to be positioned through smaller updates, while the Ultra 4 represents a generational leap.

How reliable is Digitimes as a source?

Digitimes is typically well-informed when it comes to supply chain reports, especially regarding Asian suppliers. The points mentioned today are consistent with the report from summer 2025 and are supported by concrete supplier observations – making the report more reliable than mere market speculation. Digitimes is usually weaker when it comes to detailed questions about the software or feature set; in this area, other sources such as Bloomberg or Ming-Chi Kuo often provide more precise information.

For the moment, the situation is clear: A significant redesign and a sensor upgrade have been consistently reported in at least two independent Digitimes reports, but the exact design changes and sensor types remain unknown. Experience shows that this changes in the last two to three months before launch, when dummies, cases, and concrete specifications leak from the supply chain.

Apple's Apple Watch line is moving closer to medicine

The Apple Watch Ultra 4 will thus be the biggest Ultra update since the series' inception. If the reported details are accurate, the model could serve a dual purpose for Apple – driving sales in an already rapidly growing segment and acting as a platform for medically relevant features that will later be incorporated into the Series models. For buyers who value outdoor ruggedness, maximum battery life, and advanced health sensors, waiting until autumn should be worthwhile. (Image: Shutterstock / BadPixma)
