Apple has reportedly reached a major milestone with its planned AirPods featuring built-in cameras – presumably to be marketed as AirPods Ultra. According to Bloomberg, initial prototypes with a near-final design exist, and Apple's internal testers are already using them in an advanced validation phase. Notably, the cameras are said to be located in both earbuds.
Rumors that Apple is working on AirPods with cameras have been circulating in the Apple world for months. All reports indicate that the new model will be positioned above the AirPods Pro 3 and could be called AirPods Ultra – the most important information about the H3 chip, IR cameras, and features is compiled in our rumor roundup. As early as the beginning of the year, there were indications that the AirPods could become Apple's first true AI wearable – even before Apple Glasses and a potential AI counterpart. A new report by Mark Gurman at Bloomberg now provides concrete details: Development has reached a crucial stage, with prototypes already featuring near-final design and planned functions. Apple is preparing for the next development step toward mass production.
What stage has the development reached?
The prototypes are currently undergoing Design Validation Testing (DVT). In this phase, Apple's internal testers use the devices under realistic conditions to verify that the design meets the requirements for functionality, robustness, and manufacturability. The next step is Production Validation Testing (PVT) – the final phase before early mass production. So, we're not far from that point, even though a specific market launch date remains uncertain.
Apple had originally aimed for a launch in the first half of this year. These plans were postponed because the next major Siri generation is further delayed – and this very Siri version forms the basis for the planned AI features of the new AirPods. According to the report, Apple has been working on the project for approximately four years.
How the cameras are supposed to work
The cameras are located in both earbuds – right and left. They are explicitly not intended for traditional photo or video recording. Instead, they are meant to serve as "eyes" for Siri and Apple Intelligence, capturing the surroundings in low resolution. This would allow users to ask questions about objects in front of them: a look inside the refrigerator, a question for Siri about what can be cooked with the available ingredients – and the assistant would provide a suggestion without the need to take the iPhone out of a pocket.
The concept would be comparable to uploading a photo to an AI service like ChatGPT or using the visual intelligence feature on the iPhone – only without the detour via the smartphone camera. Apple is planning further use cases: context-sensitive reminders based on what is seen, or significantly more precise navigation where the AI names specific landmarks where turns should be made.
How the design differs from the current model
Visually, the camera-enabled AirPods are expected to closely resemble the current AirPods Pro. The key change lies in the stem: it will be longer to accommodate the cameras. A small LED will also indicate when visual data is being transmitted to the cloud – a security and privacy feature that transparently informs users about any active image processing.
Apple apparently anticipates high demand for the new model and is already working on secure components for mass production. This report joins a series of indications that Apple sees the model as a central pillar of its AI wearable strategy.
What strategic importance does the model have?
With AirPods featuring cameras, Apple would introduce a wearable device that is completely inconspicuous in everyday life – and therein lies its strength. Smart glasses still have to earn social acceptance. AirPods, on the other hand, have long been a part of everyday life; no one questions them. Anyone who wears visual intelligence on their body without it being noticeable has a significant advantage over competitors who have to establish a separate new device for comparable functions.
The current stage of development confirms a trend that has been emerging for months. Apple apparently plans to introduce its AI strategy not all at once, but gradually – starting with the product that has the largest installed base in the Apple ecosystem. Whether the market launch succeeds this year or not until 2027 therefore depends almost entirely on the progress of the next Siri generation.
Apple's AI wearable strategy is taking clear shape
The fact that the AirPods with cameras are already in the digital-to-video (DVT) stage is a clear signal: Apple wants to have this product ready as soon as the underlying software platform is viable. The specific launch date therefore remains tied to Siri – not to hardware readiness. (Image: Shutterstock / Steve Travelguide)
