iPhone 18 Pro: Display upgrade only comes from Samsung and LG

Apple is finalizing the OLED panel specifications for the iPhone 18 Pro models in the coming weeks. In the premium segment, only two suppliers remain: Samsung Display and LG Display. The Chinese manufacturer BOE is excluded this time – ironically, precisely because of the central display innovation of the Pro generation.

The iPhone 18 Pro display supply chain is taking shape. As a new report from South Korea reveals, Apple is awarding almost all of the OLED panels for this year's Pro lineup to the two established Korean display manufacturers. The decision isn't driven by a design detail, but rather by a technology that should have a noticeable impact on battery life and power consumption. Alongside the A20 Pro chip, the variable aperture, and the discussed smaller Dynamic Island, the display upgrade is one of the key hardware promises of the upcoming Pro model.

LTPO+ becomes the premium filter

The key innovation is called LTPO+. This abbreviation stands for an advanced version of the existing LTPO technology, which has been responsible for variable refresh rates and ProMotion in the Pro models for years. The new generation is designed to enable finer control of individual OLED pixels. This has a twofold effect: the screen can adjust its brightness more precisely to the ambient light, and energy consumption is noticeably reduced. As a result, there's more room for longer battery life – an aspect that Apple apparently intends to specifically improve in the iPhone 18 Pro, along with a slightly larger battery capacity.

Why BOE goes away empty-handed this time

Chinese display manufacturer BOE was able to secure some of the orders for the iPhone 17 Pro. The situation is different for the iPhone 18 Pro. According to reports from South Korea, BOE is not adequately meeting the quality and yield requirements for LTPO+ panels. This leaves the South Korean competitors without competition in the premium segment. For Apple, this represents a familiar situation: dependence on Samsung Display and LG Display remains high for cutting-edge technology because simply no other source can supply the same specifications in the necessary quantities. A similar dynamic also shapes Apple's long-term plans for a special anniversary iPhone, where Samsung is again named as a key partner for particularly demanding display technology.

More than just a panel upgrade

However, LTPO+ isn't the only requirement. According to Korean reports, Apple is also planning to use Samsung's under-screen infrared technology. This component is essential for parts of the Face ID system to disappear behind the display – a technical requirement directly related to the discussed miniaturization of the Dynamic Island. The underlying HIAA display technology from Samsung's portfolio has been cited for months as a key component for the new front design. However, the extent to which Apple will actually implement these components in the 2026 model year remains to be seen.

Longer battery life as a noticeable everyday advantage

Display quality remains at the usual premium level, and the move from LTPO to LTPO+ is more than just a marketing term. Expect a more efficient screen, longer battery life, and likely a slightly higher peak brightness. Those upgrading from a current Pro model will most likely notice the difference in everyday power consumption. However, no visible visual improvements are to be expected – Apple is focusing more on the core functionality than the aesthetics.

Apple's display strategy is shifting towards Korea

With the awarding of the LTPO+ contract to Samsung Display and LG Display, Apple is cementing the Korean manufacturers' position in the premium segment in the short term. While BOE remains relevant as a supplier for older models, it is excluded from the top tier, at least for this season. Final approval of the panels is expected in the coming weeks – in time to prepare for mass production of the iPhone 18 Pro for its launch in fall 2026. (Image: Shutterstock / Framesira)
