iPhone 18 delayed further: Apple extends iPhone 17 production for an unusually long time

A new clue from the supply chain is solidifying into certainty: Apple is not planning the iPhone 18 for fall 2026, but for spring 2027. This time, the evidence comes not from an analyst, but directly from the production lines.

For months, reports have been mounting that Apple is fundamentally restructuring its iPhone strategy for 2026. Behind the scenes, Apple is permanently switching the iPhone release cycle to two dates per year – with the Pro models and the iPhone Ultra in the fall, and the standard iPhone and the iPhone Air 2 the following spring. There has been no confirmation from Cupertino itself, but the independent evidence is now sufficient to consider the plan virtually certain. The latest clue comes from Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital, who has been considered a reliable source within the Apple supply chain for years – and he provides a data point directly from production.

What the new supply chain notification specifically states

According to the leaker, Apple has officially extended production of the regular iPhone 17 – and even expanded manufacturing capacity in preparation for a longer sales cycle. This is unusual, because according to Apple's previous logic, production of the predecessor model typically slows down in the months leading up to a new iPhone launch. While Apple continues to sell older base models, sales volumes decrease as soon as a successor is on the market.

Apple's decision to do the exact opposite only makes sense under one condition: there will be no standard iPhone 18 in the fall of 2026 to replace the iPhone 17. Instead, the iPhone 17 will remain the central entry-level option in Apple's lineup for significantly longer, because its successor won't arrive until six months later.

The split launch is becoming a reality

This supply chain hint fits seamlessly into the larger picture that has emerged from the ongoing overview of all the iPhone 18 rumors over the past few months. The plan: In September 2026, Apple will introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the first foldable iPhone, codenamed the iPhone Ultra. The standard iPhone 18, iPhone 18e, and the redesigned iPhone Air 2 will follow in spring 2027 – likely in March.

The logic behind this is understandable: According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, the iPhone Ultra will break the $2,000 mark. A standard iPhone 18 launching at the same time for around $800 would divert attention. By postponing the launch until spring, each model gets its own dedicated marketing window.

Why the supply chain reveals more than the analysts

What's remarkable about this observation isn't its content, but its nature. Up until now, the anticipated split launch has relied primarily on reports from analysts and journalists like Mark Gurman and Ming-Chi Kuo. An extended production release, on the other hand, is a concrete, documented event in Apple's supply chain—with consequences for component orders, contract manufacturers, and logistics. Such operational decisions are not made speculatively at Apple.

What this means for buyers

Anyone wanting a new iPhone in fall 2026 will have only three options: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, or the significantly more expensive iPhone Ultra. Those waiting for the standard iPhone 18 will have to wait until March or April 2027. Reports from recent weeks also suggest that Apple is deliberately cutting corners on the iPhone 18's specifications to bring the model closer to the entry-level price point. The Pro models will receive all the attention, while the standard iPhone will be intentionally sidelined.

Apple's new iPhone calendar is taking shape

What's emerging here is more than just a one-off delay. Apple is establishing a permanent two-event model, in which premium devices dominate the fall and volume devices the spring. The extended iPhone 17 production is the first visible operational step in this new logic. Anyone waiting for the standard iPhone 18 is planning for 2027 – not 2026.
