The base model iPhone 18 will not be released in fall 2026, but rather in spring 2027 – alongside the iPhone 18e and the iPhone Air 2. Despite potential cost-cutting measures, the iPhone 18 will receive a key Pro feature: the jump to 12 GB of RAM. Rumors are mixed – with clear upgrades and some unanswered questions.

With the iPhone 18, Apple is making a historic break: For the first time in over ten years, no standard iPhone will be unveiled in September. Instead, Apple is postponing the launch to spring 2027 and dedicating fall 2026 entirely to the premium models iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and iPhone Ultra. While a Weibo leaker reports spec downgrades, analyst Dan Nystedt recently hinted at clear advantages – including the jump to 12 GB of RAM.

Splitting the iPhone lineup into two launch windows is the biggest strategic shift in iPhone marketing since the introduction of the Pro models in 2019. The reason: Apple wants to ensure that the ultra-expensive iPhone Ultra (over $2,000) receives undivided attention in the fall of 2026, without the more affordable standard model diluting the headlines. At the same time, this gives Apple more time for the mass production of the 2nm chips, which will initially only be sufficient for the Pro models in the fall.

The iPhone 18 is shaping up to be a model of mixed signals. On the one hand, there are potential cost-cutting measures due to the global memory chip crisis, while on the other hand, a clear "pro" feature is included in the standard model: 12 GB of RAM. Apple is investing where it's crucial for AI functions and cutting costs where the average user would hardly notice.

iPhone 18: No September launch for the first time in over ten years

Apple's decision to postpone the iPhone 18 until spring is historically unprecedented. Since 2014, a standard iPhone has been released every September. This pattern will be broken for the first time in 2026.

Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman confirmed the plan in April 2026: the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e will debut simultaneously in spring 2027, along with the redesigned iPhone Air 2. This establishes Apple's permanent two-event model per year: a premium launch in the fall and a mass-market launch in the spring.

The logic behind this is understandable. According to Gurman, the iPhone Ultra will break the $2,000 mark and needs maximum attention. A simultaneously launching iPhone 18 for $799 would divert that attention. By delaying the spring launch, each model gets its own window, and Apple secures two sales surges per year.

A20 chip and 12 GB RAM: The key Pro feature

One of the most important pieces of good news comes from analyst Dan Nystedt: According to his confirmation, the iPhone 18 will get the new A20 chip – and thus also the jump to 12 GB of RAM. That would be 50 percent more RAM than the current iPhone 17, which is still equipped with 8 GB.

This is a clear signal. While Apple made all iPhone 16 and iPhone 17 models compatible with Apple Intelligence, they reserved the 12GB RAM upgrade for the Pro models. With the iPhone 18, the standard model now also has the same amount of RAM – an important step, as future AI features will require more RAM, and Apple clearly wants to prevent the standard model from falling behind.

The A20 also marks the switch to TSMC's 2nm process, which delivers up to 15 percent more performance and 30 percent better energy efficiency compared to the A19. Apple is expected to source LPDDR5X memory from Samsung, with Micron and SK Hynix as alternative suppliers.

Conflict: Downgrade leak vs. Analyst

This is where the rumors get interesting. Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital previously reported that Apple is planning targeted downgrades for the iPhone 18 – including the chip. Possible scenarios, according to the report, would be: sticking with the A19 instead of switching to the A20, or a cut-down A20 variant with fewer GPU cores.

Analyst Dan Nystedt contradicts this interpretation and confirms the full A20 chip, including a 12GB RAM upgrade. Both sources have reported reliably in the past, so the final word hasn't been spoken yet. Nystedt's version is currently more plausible, as the RAM increase fits into Apple's broader strategy of opening up AI features to the entire product line.

A middle ground is also possible: Apple installs the A20, but cuts corners in other areas such as memory bandwidth, modem or camera control.

iPhone 18: Possible cost-cutting measures in detail

Even though the chip isn't part of the cost-cutting measures, Apple is reportedly planning further cost reductions for the iPhone 18. The following are being discussed:

  • Display specifications: Possible reduction in peak brightness or manufacturing quality without completely sacrificing ProMotion.
  • Camera Control: No haptic feedback or touch recognition; only the mechanical shutter release function remains.
  • RAM speed: Possibly LPDDR5X-8533 instead of the faster 9600 variant.
  • C-Modem: Stick with the C1X from the iPhone Air instead of switching to the new C2

These cost-cutting measures are plausible because they are barely noticeable to the average user. Apple is keeping the selling price stable at $799 instead of raising it – the cost-cutting measures are being implemented in components that don't have a significant impact on everyday use.

Important for context: While leaks mentioned a return to 60 Hz ProMotion or a downgrade to the older A19 as theoretical options, these are considered unlikely. Apple is retaining the core features – the cost-cutting measures are in the peripheral areas.

Front camera: 24 megapixels or stick with the 18 MP sensor?

The situation regarding the selfie camera upgrade is unclear. A report from November 2025 mentioned a 24 MP upgrade for the entire iPhone 18 lineup. However, more recent leaks from Weibo tipsters Whylab and Apple Club from February 2026 restrict the upgrade to the Pro models – the standard iPhone 18 would therefore remain at 18 MP.

Both leakers have a limited track record, which is why we're treating this rumor with caution. There's also a technical nuance to consider: the current 18MP sensor in the iPhone 17 already uses a 24MP hardware sensor with pixel binning. A "24MP upgrade" could therefore simply mean that Apple is using the full sensor without binning – without actually installing any new hardware.

No major changes are expected for the back. The dual-camera setup with a 48MP main camera and a 12MP ultrawide lens is likely to be carried over virtually unchanged from the iPhone 17. Variable aperture and the new Samsung PD-TR Logic sensor will remain exclusive to the Pro models.

Background: Memory chip crisis drives the strategy

The cost-cutting discussion is not an isolated incident, but part of Apple's response to the global memory chip crisis, which already delayed the MacBook Ultra launch. Rising RAM and NAND prices are putting pressure on Apple's profit margin. Instead of raising the sales price, Apple is resorting to component cost-saving measures – but without reducing the amount of RAM itself.

Apple is currently accepting deliberately lower margins to gain market share. The iPhone 18e thus remains the most affordable option, while the iPhone 18 takes on the mid-range role. Those who want true pro features have to opt for the iPhone 18 Pro – which is made even more attractive by this differentiation.

Price: $799 (likely)

Apple apparently wants to maintain the starting price of $799. This is also the main reason for the cost-cutting measures: Instead of raising the price (as Samsung did with the Galaxy S26), Apple prefers to save on individual components.

Storage options are expected to remain at 256 GB as the entry-level option and 512 GB as the next level up. Apple already dropped the 128 GB variant with the iPhone 17.

iPhone 18: Who should wait?

The iPhone 18 is aimed at anyone looking for a modern iPhone at a standard price, but who doesn't need a Pro model. Those currently using an iPhone 15 or older will get a significant upgrade in performance and battery life with the iPhone 18 – and, most importantly, a major RAM jump to 12 GB.

Those who already own an iPhone 17 can at least consider the RAM increase as an argument for waiting. AI features like the new Gemini-based Siri will become increasingly important in the coming years, and 12 GB instead of 8 GB provides significantly more headroom. Anyone who absolutely wants a new iPhone in the fall of 2026 will have to opt for the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, or iPhone Ultra – the standard model won't follow for months.
