According to a new leak, Apple is downgrading the planned specifications of the regular iPhone 18 to save costs. This will bring the device closer to the cheaper iPhone 18e.
The global memory chip crisis is forcing even Apple to make strategic adjustments. While the company continues to rely on premium materials and features for its Pro models, Apple is apparently taking a different approach with the standard iPhone 18. Weibo leaker Fixed Focus Digital reports that Apple is downgrading certain manufacturing processes, chip specifications, memory, and other components in the regular iPhone 18 – as a targeted cost-saving measure.
The regular iPhone 18 is expected to become technically closer to the more affordable iPhone 18e. The lines between the two models are blurring – a remarkable development that shifts the established segmentation model between standard and e variants. The leaker claims to have confirmed the information through multiple sources and points to his earlier accurate prediction that the iPhone 17e would retain a notch instead of a Dynamic Island – contrary to other reports.
What differences have mattered so far?
To understand what this means for the iPhone 18, it's worth taking a look at the current generation. There are numerous differences between the iPhone 17e and the iPhone 17:
- Dynamic Island (only on iPhone 17)
- Display size and brightness
- ProMotion (120 Hz refresh rate, only on iPhone 17)
- Front camera with improved specifications
- Ultra-wide-angle camera on the back
- Battery life
It's still unclear which of these differentiating features Apple has reduced between the iPhone 18 and iPhone 18e. It's possible that the two models will only differ in a few aspects – which raises the question of why Apple offers both versions at all.
Split-launch strategy confirmed
The report also underscores Apple's new launch strategy. According to the leaker, the regular iPhone 18 is expected to be released months after the iPhone 18 Pro – as part of the new split-launch strategy, which for the first time separates the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18.
According to this plan, the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Ultra will be unveiled in fall 2026. The iPhone 18e, iPhone 18, and iPhone Air 2 will follow in spring 2027. The decision to downgrade the regular iPhone 18 fits this pattern: Apple is taking more time with the more affordable models and optimizing them primarily for cost-effectiveness – while the Pro models will represent the technological pinnacle in the fall.
iPhone 18: What this means strategically
This move aligns with a broader shift in Apple's product strategy. The company is currently accepting lower margins to gain market share. However, for non-Pro iPhones, this apparently also means that Apple is cutting costs on the components themselves – not just on the sales price.
The iPhone 18e remains the most affordable option, while the iPhone 18 takes on the mid-range role. Those wanting true pro features will have to opt for the iPhone 18 Pro – which is made even more attractive by this differentiation.
Whether the leak is confirmed will only become clear in spring 2027 at the earliest, when the iPhone 18 is officially unveiled. If it proves true, the iPhone 18 will mark a shift in Apple's product strategy: The non-Pro iPhones will not only be cheaper, but also technically simpler – allowing the Pro models to stand out even more.
