iOS 27: Leak reveals four new features, including a Wallet upgrade

Just over two months before WWDC, a leak of Apple's backend code reveals four new features planned for iOS 27. These include new visual intelligence capabilities, an AI feature for Safari, and a long-awaited wallet feature.

Rumors about iOS 27 are intensifying as WWDC approaches in June. After Apple internally sent its Siri developers to AI boot camp, a new leak now provides the first concrete clues as to which features iOS 27 might bring. Developer Nicolás Alvarez discovered four functions in Apple's backend code, which have been confirmed by MacRumors.

The four leaked features primarily concern Apple Intelligence and Apple Wallet. They build upon existing functions but fill significant gaps in Apple's ecosystem. The Wallet upgrade, in particular, is likely to please many users – it's a feature that Google Wallet has offered since 2024.

Visual Intelligence recognizes nutritional information

The first new visual intelligence feature will scan nutrition labels and display additional information about the ingredients. According to the leak, integration with the Apple Health app for food tracking is also planned – a feature that Bloomberg reported was already in development in early 2026.

This would represent an important step for Apple Health towards calorie and nutrition tracking. Currently, the Apple Watch and iPhone Health integration lacks a native solution for food logging, which is why many users resort to third-party apps like MyFitnessPal.

Add contacts via visual scan

A second visual intelligence enhancement concerns the Contacts app. iOS 27 will allow users to add new contacts, including name, phone number, and address, directly from scanned business cards or similar templates. This feature works similarly to the existing ability to import appointments from scanned flyers directly into the calendar.

For anyone who still regularly receives business cards, this would be a significant time saving compared to manually typing them out.

iOS 27: Safari automatically names tab groups

iOS 27 will introduce an AI feature in Safari that automatically names tab groups based on their content. For example, if you have several tabs open related to a vacation destination, a group with a fitting name would be suggested – instead of having to name them manually.

This is a typical Apple intelligence application: small but noticeable improvements in everyday life, likely running on Apple's private cloud compute infrastructure.

Wallet: Finally digitizing physical passports

The most interesting feature of the leak concerns Apple Wallet. iOS 27 is said to allow users to convert physical passes into digital versions for Apple Wallet. Specifically, this means that anyone who scans the barcode of their gym membership, loyalty card, or event ticket will receive a digital pass in Wallet.

Third-party apps like Wallet Creator have offered this feature for years, albeit with varying degrees of reliability. Google integrated a similar function into Google Wallet back in August 2024. Apple is finally catching up – for many, this is a long-overdue improvement that could noticeably lighten the load on wallets in everyday life.

iOS 27: What else might be coming

The four leaked features are likely just a small sample of what will be shown at WWDC in June. According to previous reports, Apple is planning a comprehensive Siri overhaul as well as further Apple Intelligence features. However, the backend code findings provide an initial indication of the direction iOS 27 is taking: practical, AI-powered everyday functions that noticeably increase user-friendliness.
