Apple's Chinese supplier Sunny Optical has begun production of a key component for a new camera feature in the iPhone 18 Pro. The variable aperture is intended to give Apple users full control over depth of field for the first time.

The variable aperture – for years one of the most requested camera features for the iPhone – appears to finally be becoming a reality with the iPhone 18 Pro. According to a report by ET News, the Chinese supplier Sunny Optical has begun production of the actuators that will control the aperture blades in the iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max. This is a strong indication that the long-awaited feature will arrive this year.

Unlike previous years, when the variable aperture was repeatedly rumored but never implemented, several factors point to an actual launch this fall. Production of the necessary components is already underway, and Apple needs to plan backwards in its supply chain: the actuators must be manufactured now so that LG Innotek can begin assembling the complete camera modules in June or July.

What a variable aperture can do

A variable aperture allows the opening of the light-emitting pupil at the lens to be adjusted in several steps. The practical benefit: full control over the depth of field – that is, over which area of the image is in focus and which is blurred.

A wide aperture creates a shallow depth of field, which isolates subjects like portraits from the background. A medium aperture allows the background to remain visible, while the main subject stays in focus. A closed aperture results in a sharp image across the entire frame – ideal for landscapes or architectural photography.

Currently, Apple only emulates this effect via software in Portrait mode. With a true variable aperture, the iPhone 18 Pro would, for the first time, offer hardware capabilities previously only found in DSLR and mirrorless cameras.

The supply chain behind the feature

Apple's camera manufacturing process involves several stages. Sunny Optical produces the actuators – the mechanical components that open and close the aperture blades. LG Innotek assembles these into the complete camera modules. These modules then go to Foxconn and other contract manufacturers, who install them in the finished iPhones.

Sunny Optical's early production launch fits the typical timeline for a fall release. Mass production of the iPhones themselves traditionally begins in June; no delays have been announced so far.

iPhone 18 Pro: Realistic Expectations

As exciting as the news is, expectations should remain realistic. The sensors in the iPhone are significantly smaller than those in dedicated cameras. Even with a wide aperture, the small sensor doesn't produce the extreme blurring that SLR cameras generate. The variable aperture will therefore be a gradual improvement, not a revolution.

Nevertheless, this feature is a significant step forward: it gives photographers more creative control, improves image quality in varying lighting conditions, and brings the iPhone 18 Pro closer to the level of professional cameras. Combined with other anticipated design changes and the potential new Crimson color, the iPhone 18 Pro is likely to be one of the most interesting iPhone upgrades in recent years.
