iPhone future: Apple switches to semi-annual releases

The entire iPhone release schedule could change in 2026 and 2027. Apple is apparently working on a new plan that would distribute the iPhone across two fixed release windows per year. This is intended to ensure a more consistent revenue flow and strengthen its position in the smartphone market. The upcoming models could be the first to reflect this change.

Traditionally, the iPhone is released in the fall. Four models mark the familiar start of the new product year. Apple has also occasionally launched individual variants in the spring. Current information suggests that these occasional spring releases will become a permanent part of the product strategy. Premium devices will remain in the fall, while the entry-level and additional models will follow six months later. This creates a clearly structured and regular release cycle.

Planned two-part release starting in 2026

Reports from Mark Gurman in the Bloomberg newsletter Power On indicate a significant shift in Apple's plans. A lineup of three high-end iPhones is planned for fall 2026. These include the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the anticipated iPhone Fold. This foldable model would be the first attempt to establish a new device category within the iPhone segment and position Apple as a leader in the foldable market.

The base iPhone is moving to spring.

While the premium devices will remain in September, the regular iPhone 18 is expected to arrive in spring 2027. It will be accompanied by an update to the iPhone 18e. The E series will thus remain the budget-friendly addition to the main lineup. At the same time, there's a possibility that Apple will introduce an updated iPhone Air during this period. This device could be positioned between the base model and the Pro models, further strengthening the spring launch.

Up to six new iPhones per year

This new structure creates a clear workflow. Premium iPhones are released in the fall, followed by models with letter designations every six months. This results in five to six new iPhone launches per year. Apple thus distributes its new products more evenly and generates continuous market interest.

Repeated references to this schedule

The idea of a spring release schedule for the iPhone isn't entirely new. It was previously reported that Apple intended to launch the E-series in the spring. Additional evidence emerged in the summer suggesting that the base iPhone might be delayed until the beginning of the year. The current information, however, paints a complete picture of a two-part iPhone release plan for the first time. Gurman anticipates that this pattern will persist for the next few years.

New iPhone rhythm changes Apple's annual plan

The potential shift to two fixed release windows per year marks a significant change in Apple's strategy. While the iPhone remains the technological focus, its release structure will also be reimagined. A premium launch in the fall and a second lineup in the spring will offer greater flexibility, more consistent sales, and a clearer structure. If the reports are accurate, the iPhone is evolving into a product that shapes the entire year rather than just dominating the fall. (Image: Shutterstock / Wongsakorn 2468)
