Apple has reportedly postponed the launch of the iPhone Air 2 indefinitely. A report from The Information suggests that the company has paused its plans for the next model in the Air series. According to the report, engineers and suppliers have been informed that the device has been "taken off schedule"—without a new release date. Three people familiar with the project are said to have confirmed the information. This leaves one of the most intriguing iPhone projects of the coming years facing an uncertain future.
The iPhone Air was introduced in the fall as a particularly light and thin model and was originally intended to complement the classic and Pro models. The goal was to offer an iPhone with a large display and low weight, striking a new balance between performance, comfort, and design. The second generation, the iPhone Air 2, was meant to further develop this approach, refining it both technically and aesthetically. But now Apple seems to have completely reconsidered its plans – and the project is facing possible cancellation.
iPhone Air 2 release reportedly postponed
The plan was for the iPhone Air 2 to be unveiled this fall alongside the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Fold. It was intended to be lighter than its predecessor and have a larger battery capacity. Furthermore, according to internal sources, Apple was working on integrating the vapor chamber cooling system, first used in the iPhone 17 Pro, into the iPhone Air 2. This system improves heat dissipation and ensures more stable performance during intensive use.
Sources within the supply chain also suggested that the iPhone Air 2 might feature dual cameras for the first time – a move that would have brought the device closer to the Pro series. However, all these plans are currently on hold. According to The Information, Apple is reportedly "on the verge of scrapping the next iPhone Air." While some engineers and partners are still working on parts of the project, without a clear release date, it's uncertain whether the device will ever see the light of day.
The decision to remove an already well-developed iPhone model from the schedule is considered unusual, if not unprecedented. Apple typically adheres to its product cycles – a complete postponement without a replacement date is therefore a strong signal.
Decline in production and possible reasons
One possible reason for the delay appears to be the sales figures for the current iPhone Air. According to the report, these have fallen significantly short of expectations. In response, Foxconn, one of Apple's key partners, has already shut down almost all production lines for the first model. Only one and a half lines are currently still active; the remaining production is expected to cease by the end of the month. Luxshare, another Apple supplier, also halted production of the device at the end of October.
Apple is apparently reacting to a trend reminiscent of previous model series. The company took similar steps with the iPhone mini and iPhone Plus after disappointing demand. The pattern is familiar: devices that appeal to too small a target group often disappear from the lineup after a short time.
The iPhone Air 2 appears to be the next victim of this strategy. According to internal sources, the device was firmly planned for release on Apple's roadmap, but was scrapped at the last minute to focus resources on other models.
Looking to the future: a possible re-release is not out of the question.
The iPhone Air 2 is apparently not completely abandoned. According to The Information, there's a possibility that Apple will revise the device and relaunch it at a later date. One conceivable option would be a release in spring 2027 – alongside the iPhone 18 and the more affordable iPhone 18e.
By then, Apple is expected to unveil three models in the fall of 2026: the iPhone 18 Pro, the iPhone 18 Pro Max, and the foldable iPhone Fold. This will allow the company to focus on premium devices and the new product category of the foldable iPhone.
Whether the iPhone Air 2 still plays a role in this new strategy remains to be seen. It's possible that Apple will revise the concept and focus the Air series more strongly on specific markets or target groups.
Ambitious start, abrupt halt: Apple's dilemma with the iPhone Air 2
The potential delay of the iPhone Air 2 is a significant setback for a project with great potential. The first iPhone Air impressed with its slim design, large 6.5-inch display, and a weight that made it one of the lightest smartphones in its class.
