MacBook 2026: Apple opens up to price-conscious buyers

According to a Bloomberg report, Apple is working on a new, more affordable Mac notebook, slated for release in the first half of 2026. The device is expected to cost significantly less than $1,000, directly competing with budget Windows laptops and Chromebooks. This move marks a new direction for Apple, which has previously positioned its MacBooks exclusively in the premium segment.

For years, the MacBook has been a symbol of performance, design, and quality—but also of an expensive product. Even the cheapest model, the MacBook Air, starts at around $999 (in Germany, €1,099). Students receive a discount through the Education Store, which lowers the entry price somewhat, but it's still significantly more expensive than many other notebooks. While Apple offers a cheaper alternative with the Mac mini starting at €699, it's not a portable device and comes without a screen, keyboard, and mouse. A new, more affordable MacBook could fill this gap for Apple and appeal to a target group that has previously opted for cheaper PCs or Chromebooks. Students and casual users who primarily want to browse the web, edit documents, or stream content could particularly benefit from the new model.

Apple's plan: an affordable MacBook

The planned MacBook is intended to be a fully-fledged notebook, not just a combination of an iPad and keyboard. The goal is to create a device that offers Apple's design and software quality, but in a more attractive price range. According to reports, it will cost "significantly under $1,000," making it the most affordable Mac notebook Apple has ever offered. Apple has not yet released any official details, but several sources indicate a market launch in the first half of 2026. This would place the device close to the planned new generation of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro with the M5 chip.

Technical specifications and processor

According to renowned Apple analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the new MacBook will feature a 13-inch display and, instead of a traditional Mac processor, will utilize a chip from the iPhone line. Specifically, the A18 Pro is rumored – the processor first used in the iPhone 16 Pro. This decision would be unusual, as Apple typically uses its own M-series processors in Macs. However, an A18 chip could significantly reduce manufacturing costs, as it is already produced in large quantities for iPhones. At the same time, the chip would be efficient enough to easily handle everyday tasks such as web browsing, office work, and media playback. This would clearly target users who don't require professional computing power but are looking for a simple, portable system for everyday use.

design and colors

Apple could also be taking a new approach to design. According to Kuo, the affordable MacBook will be available in several colors, similar to the current iMac. Silver, blue, pink, and yellow are mentioned. This would allow Apple to loosen up the rather conservative color palette of its previous notebooks and appeal to a younger audience. Despite the more affordable price point, it's not expected that Apple will make significant compromises in materials or build quality. The chassis will likely remain slim and light, similar to the MacBook Air, but with technically simplified components.

Positioning within the Mac lineup

The new model will not replace any existing MacBook, but rather expand the product line. According to current information, Apple plans to offer it alongside the upcoming M5 versions of the MacBook Air and MacBook Pro, which are also expected to be released in early 2026. This will create a clearer product portfolio: The affordable MacBook will form the entry-level segment, the MacBook Air will remain the mid-range model, and the MacBook Pro will continue to be aimed at professional users.
The new device could also be an alternative to the iPad with keyboard, which has often been used as a cost-effective replacement for a notebook. Those who have previously used an iPad with Magic Keyboard could get a fully functional notebook for a similar price with the new MacBook – running macOS instead of iPadOS.

importance for the market

A budget-friendly MacBook would represent a strategic breakthrough for Apple. Until now, Macs have always been positioned as premium products, while the lower-priced market segments have been left to Windows devices and Chromebooks. Apple could challenge this competitive dominance in the education sector and among price-conscious customers with the new device. The move is reminiscent of the introduction of the iPhone SE, which successfully established itself as a budget-friendly alternative within the iPhone lineup. Should Apple pursue a similar approach with the MacBook, the new model could become one of the best-selling products in the notebook segment.

A new course: Apple opens up the MacBook world to beginners

The planned 2026 MacBook marks a significant strategic shift for Apple. Priced under $1,000 and powered by an A18 Pro chip, the company could finally offer a device that makes entering the Mac world considerably easier. For many users who have previously relied on more affordable alternatives, this MacBook should be an attractive option – lightweight, colorful, efficient, and within the familiar Apple ecosystem. Official details are still pending, but current indications suggest that Apple is strategically expanding its notebook lineup to reach new target groups. 2026 could therefore be the pivotal moment for the relaunch of the entry-level MacBook.
