Liquid Glass iPhone: This is what Apple's anniversary model could look like

Rumors are swirling around the 2027 anniversary iPhone – and a new suggestion has provided a particularly catchy name for the new display: "Liquid Glass." Apple is reportedly planning to apply the term, which has been used for the software design system since 2025, to the hardware as well. The result: an iPhone display with a subtle curve and a virtually invisible bezel.

The information comes from the well-known leaker Ice Universe, who published his theory on X. It's important to note upfront: the report is based solely on a single post, without citing any sources or supply chain insiders. It is therefore clearly speculation. However, Ice Universe has been correct several times in the past with advance information about Apple products, which is why his posts are taken seriously within the industry. Nevertheless, the concept fits logically into the picture that previous reports have painted of the anniversary iPhone.

The idea behind the liquid glass display

Liquid Glass has been a central concept in Apple's software world since 2025. The shimmering, semi-transparent design language permeates iOS 26, macOS Tahoe, visionOS, and other Apple platforms. It has been, and remains, controversial – readability issues and discussions surrounding visual consistency have occupied Apple since its launch. But apparently, the company is sticking with the brand.

Ice Universe is now taking things a step further. According to them, Apple is taking the Liquid Glass concept to the hardware level and using it for a new generation of displays. The screen concept is said to feature a curvature for the first time in the iPhone lineup – though not in the form seen on older Samsung or Huawei devices.

Subtle curvature instead of aggressive edge curve

Curved displays are nothing new. The first commercially available smartphone with a curved screen was the Samsung Galaxy Round – back in 2013. Since then, many Android manufacturers have experimented with varying degrees of curvature. According to Ice Universe, Apple is taking a significantly more subtle approach.

The curvature is said to be "extremely subtle." The actual optical effect is therefore not created by the sloping display edges themselves, but by a combination of optical refraction, light-guiding structures, and specifically designed visual illusions. It sounds complex, but is intended to lead to a simple result: the display frame almost completely disappears from the eye, while the side view of the image remains natural and undistorted.

Why this doesn't apply to 2026

Ice Universe refers to Apple's "next-generation display." He doesn't mention any specific dates. Nevertheless, the timeframe can be narrowed down relatively clearly. The iPhone 18 Pro and the foldable iPhone Ultra are planned for fall 2026. The iPhone 18 Pro is expected to undergo iterative development, while the iPhone Ultra will clearly focus on its foldable form factor—not on a completely new display architecture.

The liquid glass display is therefore likely intended for the iPhone's 20th anniversary in 2027. Apple has been planning a radical redesign for precisely this model for some time – with curved glass edges all around, no visible display cutouts, and a visual impression reminiscent of a single block of glass.

This fits the picture presented in previous reports

Ice Universe's description aligns well with what is currently known about the anniversary iPhone. ETNews reported back in 2025 on a so-called "four-edge bending" technology, where the display extends across all four edges. Bloomberg spoke similarly of an iPhone that would be made largely of glass and would no longer have display notches.

These reports were recently reinforced by a leak from Digital Chat Station. According to the leak, Samsung Display is producing a special panel with micro-curvature on all four sides – thinner and brighter than previous OLEDs. Those interested in delving deeper into this panel concept can find the details in our article on the Samsung Micro-Curved OLED display for the anniversary iPhone.

Curvature or display illusion?

Interestingly, Ice Universe's description at least partially aligns with an earlier counter-theory. In early 2026, the leaker phonefuturist claimed that Apple wouldn't use a true quad-curved OLED display at all, but instead opted for a flat OLED panel with curved glass and optical tricks. The reasoning: According to internal sources, true four-sided curvature has too many drawbacks – uneven pixel density, inconsistent touch sensitivity, and long-term stability issues.

The liquid glass theory could describe precisely this middle ground: not a fully curved display, but a combination of minimal curvature, optical refraction, and clever glass modeling that creates the impression of a borderless device. We've summarized more on the question of just how radical the anniversary model actually is in our article Why the Anniversary Model Will Be Less Radical.

Apple has long been familiar with subtle curves

Ice Universe adds an interesting detail. Apple also has experience with curved display edges – just not with the iPhone. The Apple Watch has used a display for years that slopes gently at the edges, thus concealing the bezel. The principle is therefore not new, but rather tried and tested internally. For the iPhone, Apple would simply need to implement it on a larger scale and with even finer craftsmanship.

Within the industry, there is therefore an expectation that Apple will market the term "Liquid Glass" less as a technological revolution and more as a perfected implementation of an existing concept – a pattern that the company also uses with the foldable iPhone Ultra: not the first, but supposedly the best foldable smartphone.

How reliable is the information?

At this point, a clear distinction is important. While Ice Universe is a well-known voice in the Apple leak scene and has provided accurate advance information on several occasions in the past, his current post contains no concrete evidence, no supply chain sources, and no insider confirmation. The wording in the original post - "could," "possibly" - clearly indicates that this is his own theory. It's a concept that Apple is plausibly pursuing, but one that is neither imminent nor guaranteed to appear in this form.

Three factors nevertheless support this theory. First, the Liquid Glass brand concept would merge software and hardware identity on a new level. Second, the described display architecture aligns with several parallel reports from Korea and China. Third, Apple demonstrated with the 2017 iPhone X how the company stages anniversary models – with a clear design departure and its own marketing narrative.

What we can expect by 2027

The actual market launch is still about 16 to 18 months away. During this time, many more details from Apple's supply chain are likely to emerge. Key sticking points remain the exact shape of the display curvature, the front camera solution, and the material of the side edges of the casing.

For Apple, Liquid Glass as a hardware brand would be a logical next step. Software and hardware would merge under a common design concept – a clear signal that the company has learned from the Liquid Glass launch difficulties of 2025 and is serious about developing the brand further. Whether the anniversary iPhone will actually be called that remains to be seen. One thing is certain, though: the project is generating a lot of excitement. (Image via X / Ice Universe)
