Filming for the third season of Severance is about to begin – and lead actor Adam Scott is offering a first glimpse behind the scenes. In a recent interview, he not only teases "many surprises" for the upcoming season, but also reveals a remarkable detail: The ending of the entire series has apparently already been decided – and he already knows it.

Severance is one of Apple TV's flagship shows. The mystery sci-fi series about Lumon Industries has become the streaming service's most successful production since its first season – even surpassing Ted Lasso. The cliffhanger ending of season two left millions of viewers with unanswered questions. When the series will continue and where the story will lead have been the most burning questions for the fan community ever since.

Adam Scott in an interview

In a new interview with Variety, lead actor Adam Scott spoke about the upcoming third season. As expected, he didn't reveal any specific plot points or storylines. Naturally, someone playing a lead role in one of Apple's hottest series isn't going to give away spoilers. But Scott did make two statements that have fans buzzing.

First: Viewers are in for "so many surprises." Second - and this is the real headline - the series finale is apparently already decided. Scott already knows it in full.

Scott as Executive Producer

There's a simple reason why Scott is so deeply involved in the show's development. He's not just an actor, but also an executive producer on Severance. In this dual role, he says he's involved in every stage of development. He regularly meets with the screenwriters and series creator Dan Erickson. As an actor, he prefers to have as much information as possible about his character and the overall storyline – a rather rare situation in Hollywood.

This close involvement is good news for Severance fans. It shows that the series is being developed creatively as a cohesive whole and is not improvised from season to season.

Ben Stiller remains on board

A second piece of information from the interview concerns director and co-producer Ben Stiller. Stiller will no longer direct any episodes in season 3 – this has been known for some time. However, Adam Scott confirms that Stiller will remain "very closely" involved in the project.

This dispels Scott's fears that Stiller might withdraw creatively. Stiller's signature style has decisively shaped the visual and atmospheric profile of Severance. His continued presence as the creative force behind the scenes is central to the series' identity.

Beau Willimon takes over as author

The change in direction is also related to the restructuring of the writing team. Beau Willimon – creator of House of Cards and most recently of Andor on Disney+ – has taken on a key role in the development of season 3. We've summarized more about the background story surrounding the change in the creative team in our overview article on Severance season 3.

The series ending is set – no second Lost

Scott's confirmation that the end of Severance is already planned is particularly interesting. Apple and the creative team haven't yet publicly revealed how many seasons the series will have in total. But the fact that the creators clearly know where the show is headed is a good sign.

Back in 2025, series creator Dan Erickson stated that Severance would answer all the major mysteries of the story before the series ended. With this, the team explicitly distanced itself from the infamous example of ABC's Lost, which left key questions unanswered after six seasons and remains a subject of controversial debate within the fan community to this day.

Up to four seasons are planned

Apple also has long-term business plans for Severance. At the beginning of 2026, the company acquired all rights to the series for approximately $70 million and now produces it itself through Apple Studios. As part of this acquisition, there was talk of up to four seasons – plus potential spin-offs or international versions. This aligns with Adam Scott's statement: A clear endpoint has been set, but the path to get there offers enough room for several more seasons.

Start of filming and release

Filming for the third season will begin very soon. According to the current production schedule, shooting will take place from April/May to December 2026. This will be followed by six to nine months of post-production – a typical timeframe for a production with the visual ambitions of Severance.

This suggests a realistic release window between June and September 2027. Both options are plausible: A summer release would be possible if post-production progresses quickly. An autumn release would better align with Apple's usual release strategy for prestige series.

Shorter break than between seasons 1 and 2

One thing is clear: Fans will have to wait significantly less time for season 3 than for season 2. Almost three years passed between the first and second seasons – the delay was a consequence of the writers' and actors' strikes in 2023. Apple wants to avoid such waiting times with Severance in the future, which is much easier to manage after acquiring the rights.

What fans can now expect

Adam Scott's statements don't contain any concrete spoilers, but they send an important signal. Severance remains creatively cohesive; the ending is predetermined, and the path to it is packed with numerous twists and turns, at least for the upcoming season. Those who engage with Mark, Helly, and the mystery surrounding Lumon can be confident that the story won't fizzle out.

The official start of filming and the first set photos shouldn't be long in coming. Further details are expected in the next few months – such as potential new cast members or the number of planned episodes. Severance thus remains one of the most exciting projects in the entire Apple TV portfolio. (Image: Apple)
