According to Bloomberg, Apple plans to integrate Visual Intelligence directly into the camera app – with new features such as nutritional scans and contact capture.

Apple is preparing one of the most exciting new features for iOS 27: The camera app will get its own Siri mode. What initially sounds like a minor reorganization is actually a strategic move. Apple wants to finally bring one of its underrated AI functions into the spotlight – and introduce several practical features along the way.

A new report by Bloomberg's Mark Gurman provides the details. We've analyzed the information and show what changes are likely for iPhone users.

Visual Intelligence is moving into the camera app

Currently, accessing Visual Intelligence requires a long press on the Camera Control button – a gesture many iPhone users simply aren't familiar with. Apple plans to change that with iOS 27. The feature will be integrated as a dedicated mode directly into the Camera app, on equal footing with Photo, Video, Portrait, and Panorama.

The shutter button in Siri mode will be visually redesigned: instead of the classic white circle, the Apple Intelligence logo will appear. This clearly signals to Apple that AI-powered functions are available. Users who prefer the Camera Control button can still use it – however, the shortcut will now lead directly to the new Siri mode in the Camera app, instead of the separate Visual Intelligence interface.

This relocation is more than just cosmetic. It makes Visual Intelligence visible to millions of iPhone users who have simply overlooked the feature until now.

Three new features for Visual Intelligence

With the move to the camera app, Apple delivers three new application possibilities:

Scanning nutrition labels: By holding food packaging up to the camera, users can directly import the nutritional information into the Health app. Calories and macronutrients can be recorded without typing – a feature that will be particularly interesting for users focused on nutrition tracking.

Capture contact details: Visual Intelligence recognizes phone numbers and addresses on business cards or other printed materials and transfers them directly to the contacts app. This saves the tedious typing.

Digitizing tickets: The wallet app also benefits. Physical event tickets and membership cards can now be scanned via camera, from which a digital version is automatically generated.

The existing visual intelligence features will remain. Identifying plants and animals, adding appointments to the calendar, or sending images to ChatGPT and Google – all of this will continue to work.

Part of a larger Siri overhaul

The new camera mode shouldn't be viewed in isolation. Apple is planning a comprehensive Siri overhaul for iOS 27, something the company has been working on for some time. The new Siri features, originally expected for iOS 26.4, have been postponed several times and are now planned for iOS 27.

It has already been reported that Siri will soon be able to process multiple commands in a single request. A standalone Siri app and a chatbot-like interface are also rumored. Adding to the intrigue is the deal between Apple and Google regarding Gemini processors, which are intended to power some of Siri's personalized features.

All these building blocks combine to create a picture: Apple is fundamentally redesigning Siri more than ever before – and the camera app is one of the first visible results of this strategy.

What this means for iPhone users

Integrating it into the camera app is primarily a step towards greater visibility. Visual Intelligence has existed since the iPhone 16 Pro with Camera Control, but for many users it was practically invisible. Now that Apple has prominently placed the feature in one of its most frequently used apps, its usage rate is likely to increase noticeably.

The timing is also interesting. Apple has largely kept the camera app stable in recent years, only cautiously expanding it. A new main mode is a significant change. This suggests that Apple wants to establish Visual Intelligence as a serious tool – not as a nice add-on, but as a core function.

Whether the Siri mode is truly convincing depends on two factors: recognition accuracy and speed. With new features like the nutritional scan, every second counts – a slow or error-prone scan would quickly reduce the feature to a gimmick.

iOS 27 and Siri Mode: What's next?

Apple will officially unveil iOS 27 at WWDC 2026 on June 8th. The keynote is expected to showcase much of the new Siri experience – including the revamped visual intelligence experience in the camera app.

iPhone users should look ahead. iOS 27 could be the update that brings Apple Intelligence out of the niche and into everyday life. The new camera mode is just the beginning – a taste of how deeply AI will be integrated into iOS in the future. (Image: Shutterstock / vfhnb12)
