visionOS 27: What Apple Vision Pro 2026 can really expect

Apple is about to unveil the next generation of software for the Apple Vision Pro. However, according to new information from Cupertino, the update for the headset will be significantly more subdued than its predecessor – with a clear focus on a different key aspect.

While iOS 27 and macOS 27 are expected to receive visible design changes and an expanded AI package, visionOS 27 is likely to be the quietest update within this year's software family. A new report suggests a release primarily focused on stability and ensuring functional parity with the other platforms. What other hardware and software innovations Apple is likely to unveil at WWDC 2026 has been becoming clear for months – the details of visionOS 27 complete this picture.

A deliberately smaller update

The key message comes from the latest Power-On newsletter and describes visionOS 27 as noticeably less ambitious than its predecessor. While visionOS 26 was a true feature powerhouse with spatially anchored widgets, generative photo scenes, PlayStation VR2 controller support, and numerous other innovations, 2026 focuses primarily on refinement. Performance optimizations, bug fixes, and system-wide consistency with the other 27 versions are the main priorities.

This isn't necessarily a bad thing. After such a comprehensive update as visionOS 26, a stabilization phase is beneficial – especially for a young operating system that runs on relatively few devices and whose stability is highly valued by both consumers and business customers. Our complete overview of visionOS 26 lists the full range of features of the current generation, including the premiere of several spatial tools.

The new Siri is also coming to the Vision Pro

One new feature stands out in the otherwise understated package: the new Siri. What iOS 27 and its sister systems inherit from Apple Intelligence will also be available in visionOS 27. This gives the Apple Vision Pro a voice assistant that is significantly more conversational and context-aware than before. Our overview of the major Siri relaunch in iOS 27 describes in detail just how profound this change will be – the Vision Pro will automatically benefit from all these improvements.

Especially on a headset where voice input is a much more natural form of operation than on the iPhone, the new Siri could become the hidden star feature. More complex commands, follow-up questions without having to repeat the process, or controlling multiple apps with a single input are scenarios that are particularly well-suited to the Vision Pro.

AI tools on par with the iPhone

In addition to the Siri overhaul, another area of focus is emerging for visionOS 27: AI-powered editing tools, which will also be released in iOS 27. These include three new AI features for the Photos app, which Apple plans to group under the name "Apple Intelligence Tools"—offering functions for expanding, enhancing, and recomposing image sections.

This creates an interesting situation for Vision Pro users. Spatial photos and immersive content gain depth with each new AI feature – both literally and figuratively. If the headset inherits the iPhone's generative tools, these edits can be applied and reviewed directly in the three-dimensional environment.

What the slower pace means for the platform

Up until now, Apple has developed visionOS at a remarkable pace. From its market launch in early 2024, through the numerous point updates of the 26 series – such as visionOS 26.4 with NVIDIA CloudXR integration – to the most recent hardware refresh with the M5 Vision Pro in fall 2025, the program has run at a rapid pace. The fact that visionOS 27 is now slowing down likely has several reasons.

Firstly, the platform is still young, and its user base is growing more slowly than some observers had expected. Secondly, Apple is currently focusing its software resources heavily on its AI strategy, which aims to modernize iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. A low-key visionOS update allows the company to work in parallel on larger visionOS leaps for the coming years – such as a lighter Vision Pro model or the long-discussed Apple Glasses.

From our perspective

A "quiet" update might sound disappointing at first, but it's strategically sound. The Vision Pro doesn't need the next big feature extravaganza, but rather a platform that feels reliable and integrates seamlessly with other Apple devices. If the new Siri and AI tools are on par with iOS 27, that's a significant improvement – especially since the headset, without a mouse, keyboard, or traditional touchscreen, is the most natural playground for voice-controlled AI within the Apple ecosystem.

It remains to be seen whether Apple will pull a surprise out of the hat during WWDC on June 8th. Previous rumors at least point to some adjustments that haven't yet been mentioned in the reports. We'll have final confirmation on the day of the keynote.

The software summer of 2026 is taking shape

Expectations for WWDC 2026 are high – not least because all version 27 releases and their dates are now well-documented. visionOS 27 fits into this picture as the system that consistently completes the stability focus and simultaneously aligns with Apple's overarching AI strategy. For Vision Pro users, this means next summer: fewer spectacular new features, but a system that should run noticeably smoother in everyday use – and that finally gets a Siri that lives up to its intended use in different environments.
