Apple is currently testing the next major iPhone update: iOS 26.2. Following the release of iOS 26.1, which already brought several useful improvements, the next version is now ready for release. The update is expected to be released in mid-December and will bring a whole host of new features for apps such as Podcasts, Reminders, Freeform, and more. It will also include some visual tweaks and system optimizations.
As in previous years, Apple regularly releases the so-called "x.2" versions in December – usually shortly before the Christmas break. These updates traditionally bring a mix of new features, redesigned interfaces, and technical improvements. iOS 26.2 will be no exception. The beta test is currently underway, and there are strong indications that Apple will maintain its established release schedule in 2025 as well.
iOS release date: February 26th
Apple has already confirmed that iOS 26.2 will be released in December 2025. An exact date hasn't been announced yet, but previous releases allow for a fairly accurate estimate. A look at earlier versions shows that Apple usually releases such updates between December 10th and 15th. In recent years, this has been the pattern:
- iOS 18.2: December 11 (Wednesday)
- iOS 17.2: December 11 (Monday)
- iOS 16.2: December 13 (Tuesday)
- iOS 15.2: December 13 (Monday)
This suggests that iOS 26.2 will likely be released around December 10th to 15th, 2025. However, there is one slight peculiarity: the beta test started later this year than usual, on November 4th – compared to October 23rd last year. This could slightly delay the rollout, making a release around December 10th possible but not certain. It is more likely that the final version will be released no later than December 15th or 16th.
New features in iOS 26.2
The beta version of iOS 26.2 reveals that Apple has prepared some interesting new features. Apps like Apple Podcasts, Reminders, Freeform, and Apple News, in particular, are receiving updates designed to noticeably simplify everyday use.
Apple Podcasts
Apple is introducing AI-generated chapters in its Podcasts app. This feature automatically analyzes content and creates relevant chapter markers to help users find and navigate to specific topics more quickly. This should make navigating longer episodes significantly easier.
Apple News
Apple News is also getting a fresh design. Important content and features are highlighted more clearly, improving clarity and making it more intuitive to use.
Memories app
The reminders feature a new alarm function. This allows for more flexible task planning and targeted control. For example, reminders can be triggered automatically when certain conditions are met.
Freeform app
The creative note-taking and drawing app Freeform now supports tables starting with iOS 26.2. This is especially useful for organizing projects, ideas, or mind maps. Users can now present information in a more structured way without having to resort to other tools.
Sleep rating
The health features are also getting an update. The Sleep Score has been redesigned and provides more accurate assessments of sleep quality. Apple has adjusted the scoring system to better analyze and explain sleep data.
Lock screen and liquid glass effect
Visually, iOS 26.2 offers more options for customizing the lock screen. The Liquid Glass effect of the clock can be modified more extensively, providing more scope for personal designs.
AirPods Live Translation
A highlight for travelers: The AirPods Live Translation feature, which enables real-time translations via AirPods, is being extended to the European Union. This means the feature now also works in this country – useful for conversations or meetings in other languages.
Possible additional features before release
Since iOS 26.2 is currently still in beta testing, further features could be added before the final version. Apple often uses the testing phase to implement new features or improve details. Minor optimizations in areas such as Messages, widgets, or Siri are likely, although no specific information is yet available.

Apple is also improving lock screen personalization, and the enhanced AirPods translation function makes the update even more appealing internationally.
The schedule remains the same: iOS 26.2 should be available for all iPhones by mid-December 2025. Those already using the beta can get a sense of how extensive the update will be. One thing is certain: iOS 26.2 will breathe new life into the system – and provide a fitting end to Apple's year.
