iPad mini 8: All rumors and information at a glance

Since its launch, the iPad mini has firmly established itself in Apple's portfolio. It's smaller than the iPad Air, yet powerful enough for everyday use and even more demanding tasks. The next update, the eighth-generation iPad mini, is expected in 2026. Rumors, leaks, and technical hints already point to concrete innovations, even though the design itself won't change fundamentally.

The current iPad mini was released in 2024 and, with the A17 Pro chip and the integration of Apple Intelligence, represented a significant upgrade over its predecessor. The sixth generation had previously introduced a complete redesign and the A15 Bionic. Now expectations are turning to the iPad mini 8. The new model was revealed through a code leak in August that revealed internal designations and key hardware details. The focus is on the A19 Pro chip, which will also be used in upcoming iPhone models. With this chip, Apple is focusing on a significant performance increase, while the rest of the device receives only minor tweaks.

A19 Pro chip as the most important upgrade

The biggest difference from the current model is the processor. Leaked Apple code, internally named J510 and J511, indicates that the iPad mini 8 will use the A19 Pro chip. This chip is also used in the iPhone Air, iPhone 17 Pro, and iPhone 17 Pro Max. However, like its predecessor, the iPad mini will not receive the full version. While the Pro models have a six-core GPU, the iPad mini 8 is expected to be equipped with the five-core GPU from the iPhone Air. In practice, this still represents a significant performance leap over the A17 Pro with its five-core GPU from the iPhone 15 Pro. This makes the iPad mini 8 not only faster in everyday use, but also ideal for gaming, multitasking, and using Apple Intelligence.

Hardly any changes to the design

Visually, the iPad mini 8 is unlikely to change much. The device will continue to be closely modeled on the iPad Air, adopting its compact form factor with thin bezels and Touch ID in the power button. Apple has pursued a strategy of cautious development with its smaller iPads for years. The display will also remain with the familiar LCD. Reports suggest that Apple won't introduce major changes, such as switching to OLED, until 2027 or 2028. Until then, expect more minor updates to the iPad mini.

New color variants

To create fresh purchasing incentives, there will most likely be new color options. What these will be specifically remains to be seen. Major functional changes beyond the chip upgrade and the colors are currently unknown.

Possible market launch

Apple hasn't yet announced an official date, but a presentation in the first half of 2026 is likely. Traditionally, new iPads often launch together, so a launch of the iPad mini 8 alongside new iPad Air models is considered likely.

iPad mini 8: Powerful, but without any big surprises

The iPad mini 8 won't be a revolutionary update, but will consistently focus on performance improvements thanks to the new A19 Pro chip. This makes the compact tablet once again a significantly faster and future-proof device, while the design and display remain largely unchanged. New colors also add a breath of fresh air. Those waiting for major innovations like OLED will have to wait until at least 2027 or 2028. The iPad mini 8 is expected to launch in 2026 and further strengthen the series—as a small but powerful iPad clearly modeled on the iPad Air.
