Since introducing the AirPods Max in 2020, Apple has barely changed its over-ear headphones. Aside from a minor USB-C update in 2024, the design and technology remained virtually unchanged. Now, however, evidence is mounting that Apple is working on a true second generation—the AirPods Max 2. The new version is expected to be lighter, feature a more modern chip, and isn't expected to launch until 2027.
The AirPods Max made a statement when they launched. Elegant design, high-quality materials, and impressive sound made them a premium product—but also one of the most expensive headphones on the market. They cost €600 at launch. Despite the powerful sound, there were two clear points of criticism: the heavy weight and the price. Many people wanted a lighter, more technically advanced version. That's exactly what Apple seems to be preparing now.
Lighter design planned
A key issue with the AirPods Max 2 is weight. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the new generation is intended to be lighter than the current model. How Apple intends to achieve this goal is still open. Possible options include the use of new materials or a modified construction to reduce weight without compromising sound quality or stability. Whether Apple will also revise the external design remains unclear. The company could be forced to adjust the shape or structure of the headphones to achieve the weight reduction. So far, there's no indication of major visual changes, but a revised casing or new colors are not out of the question.
New H-series chip brings more features
A major technical leap is expected in the built-in chip. The current version of the AirPods Max still uses the older H1 chip, while newer models like the AirPods Pro 2 or AirPods Pro 3 already run on the H2 chip. This means the AirPods Max lack many current features such as Adaptive Audio, personalized volume control, or improved noise cancellation. With the AirPods Max 2, Apple aims to make up for this. The new H-series chip—presumably the H2 or a revised version—should ensure better performance, sturdier connections, and more efficient noise cancellation. Integration with other Apple devices will likely also run more smoothly. In addition to the improved chip, other functions from the AirPods Pro could be adopted, such as optimized spatial audio or smarter controls via the digital crown. Whether there will be new sensors for fitness or health functions has not yet been announced.
Market launch probably not until 2027
Those waiting for the AirPods Max 2 will need patience. According to recent information from Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple plans to start mass production of the new generation in 2027. This suggests a market launch is unlikely until fall 2027 at the earliest – Apple typically launches new AirPods models in the second half of the year. Until then, the current model will likely remain in the range for some time. The recently introduced USB-C update and several software improvements indicate that Apple will continue to support the existing AirPods Max.

Price and current situation
The AirPods Max are currently available for significantly less than at launch. Prices at retailers like Amazon are currently around €500 . Despite their advanced age, they remain relevant, especially thanks to the USB-C compatibility and ongoing software updates. So, anyone who doesn't want to wait until 2027 can buy the current model with confidence. It remains powerful, features high-quality workmanship, and is firmly integrated into Apple's ecosystem.
AirPods Max 2: Technical upgrade with a long wait
The AirPods Max 2 are said to be lighter, more modern, and technically up-to-date. Apple is apparently working on reducing the weight and integrating the new H-series chip to give the headphones the features that have long been standard on its cheaper models. With a market launch not scheduled until 2027, however, the wait will be long. Until then, the current version remains a good choice—especially with the reduced price and continued support from Apple. Those seeking maximum performance and future-proof technology will likely only be truly satisfied with the AirPods Max 2.
