The iPad mini has been one of Apple's most popular devices for years, thanks to its compact size, powerful performance, and versatility. Now, strong indications suggest the next model will represent a significant leap forward, featuring an OLED display, a new chip, and a redesigned look. While things have been quiet since Apple unveiled the iPad mini 7 in 2024, new information and leaks suggest that development of the iPad mini 8 is well underway.
The upcoming iPad mini is already generating a lot of buzz. Apple is apparently working on an update that will not only improve performance but also make the design more modern and durable. The switch to OLED, in particular, is considered a milestone for the small tablet series. Interesting details have also emerged regarding the processor, the casing, and the features. Everything points to the iPad mini 8 being one of the biggest overhauls in years.
processor and performance
According to leaks, the new A19 Pro chip will power the iPad mini 8. Apple has accidentally released code snippets in which the device appears under the codenames J510 and J511. The A19 Pro is already used in the iPhone Air and iPhone 17 Pro. While the Pro models of the iPhones get the high-end version with a 6-core CPU and 6-core GPU, the iPhone Air uses a slightly less powerful variant with one fewer GPU core – and this is precisely the chip expected in the iPad mini.
The A19 Pro is based on an advanced 3-nanometer N3P process. This third generation of the 3nm process delivers increased efficiency and speed. It also features a 16-core Neural Engine, next-generation dynamic caching, and unified image compression. The GPU has a larger cache, more memory, and integrated Neural Accelerators in each core, which is said to triple its computing power compared to the previous generation. The chip is also expected to perform significantly better in AI tasks.
Compared to the A17 Pro chip in the iPad mini 7, this represents a clear performance increase. The current model already uses a 6-core CPU and a 5-core GPU, but the upcoming iPad mini should be noticeably faster and more efficient with the A19 Pro.

The biggest topic surrounding the new iPad mini is the anticipated switch from LCD to OLED. Several sources, including Mark Gurman of Bloomberg, report that Apple plans to equip the small tablet with an OLED panel for the first time. According to a leaker from the supply chain, Apple is currently testing an OLED display manufactured by Samsung.
It's unclear whether Apple will also increase the refresh rate of the iPad mini 8. The current LCD panel operates at 60 Hz, but since even the base iPhone 17 now has a 120 Hz ProMotion display, a faster panel for the new iPad mini would make sense. There are also indications that the display could grow slightly – from the current 8.3 inches to approximately 8.7 inches.
OLED displays offer many advantages: They allow for precise control of individual pixels, resulting in better contrast, deeper blacks, and more vibrant colors. They also offer faster response times and better viewing angles. Apple has been using OLED technology in its iPhones for years, and since May 2024, it has also been used in the iPad Pro.
Apple will likely use a simple LTPS (Low-Temperature Polycrystalline Silicon) OLED display in the iPad mini, while the Pro models will use a dual-layer LTPO OLED. This could make the iPad mini's display slightly dimmer, but more energy-efficient and cheaper to produce.
Case and design
Apple is also apparently planning changes to the casing. The iPad mini 8 is expected to have a more water-resistant design, similar to the protection offered by the iPhone. Mark Gurman reports that Apple is working on a new design that reduces the number of openings to better seal the device against moisture and dust.
One of the most striking innovations is likely the new vibration-based loudspeaker system. Instead of traditional speaker openings, it uses surfaces that generate sound through vibration. This means: no visible grilles, less surface area exposed to water, and an overall more robust housing.
Apple has filed relevant patents, including one for a "mechanically actuated acoustic panel system." This system vibrates flat surfaces to generate sound – similar to a speaker diaphragm. It could make its debut in a production device, the iPad mini 8.
This would make the new model the first iPad mini with true water resistance. While official IP certification hasn't been confirmed yet, it's possible. This would make the device more robust and safer to use in humid environments.
release date
The release date for the OLED iPad mini remains unclear. Various analysts and industry sources have cited differing timelines. Research firm Omdia anticipates a 2027 release, while reports from Korea, including ET News and ZDNet Korea, predict a 2026 release. Bloomberg also considers 2026 a realistic target.
Samsung Display reportedly began developing OLED prototype panels as early as May 2024. Mass production is expected to start in the second half of 2025. This suggests that Apple could unveil the new iPad mini sometime in 2026 – possibly alongside new iPad Air models.
A report from Display Supply Chain Consultants in December predicts an 8.5-inch OLED iPad mini for 2026. The larger OLED iPad Air models are then expected to follow in 2027. Although there is no official confirmation yet, a 2026 launch seems most likely.
Price
The new features are also expected to bring a price increase. Currently, the iPad mini starts at $499 (€549). According to Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman, Apple could charge around $100 more for the OLED model, bringing the starting price to approximately $599.
Gurman had already noted that Apple might consider positioning the iPad mini at a lower price to remain competitive. However, the OLED version is unlikely to become much cheaper due to the more expensive display technology and the new design.
For those looking to spend less, the 10th generation iPad offers a more affordable alternative. This model provides many of the familiar iPad mini features – such as Touch ID and Center Stage – starting at €379. So, the choice remains between maximum compactness and cutting-edge technology with the iPad mini, or a lower price with a slightly larger form factor.
