iOS 26.2: Beta reveals planned new feature for AirDrop

With iOS 26.2, Apple is working on a new feature that could significantly change how AirDrop is used. For the first time, a pairing between devices is planned that will persist for up to 30 days. This is intended to create more flexibility in everyday life while simultaneously providing better control over data privacy and visibility. The new feature was discovered in the first developer beta.

For years, AirDrop has been one of the most convenient ways to transfer files between Apple devices. At the same time, the service has repeatedly been the subject of discussions surrounding privacy and unwanted contact. With iOS 26.2, Apple apparently wants to find a new middle ground: more control without sacrificing ease of use.

New option for longer-term AirDrop visibility

AirDrop currently offers three visibility levels: “Receive off,” “Contacts only,” and “10 minutes for everyone.” While the latter setting is convenient for spontaneous transfers, it must be manually reactivated each time. This is precisely where the new option discovered in the code of iOS 26.2 Beta 1 by 9to5mac comes in.

The plan is to pair two devices using a PIN. After a successful connection, the devices will remain visible for 30 days if they are nearby. This simplifies data exchange between devices that are regularly shared – without having to adjust the AirDrop settings for each transfer.

More control over permissions

The new pairing feature can be managed via the settings. This allows you to decide at any time which devices should remain visible for AirDrop or be unpaired. The PIN-based connection also ensures that unauthorized or accidental pairings are prevented.

It's not yet clear whether this option will be added as a fourth default setting to the existing visibility levels, or whether Apple is planning a fundamental restructuring of AirDrop permissions. The current code suggests that the feature will initially only be available on devices running iOS 26.2, and that the behavior could change in later betas.

Part of a larger data protection strategy

Apple has been working on making AirDrop more secure for some time. The temporary "10 minutes for everyone" option was introduced in 2022 after reports of unwanted transfer requests—especially on public transportation or in large crowds. The planned 30-day visibility period now seems like the logical next step: targeted sharing, no permanent access, and less hassle in everyday use.

iOS 26.2: New AirDrop logic simplifies regular file transfers

iOS 26.2 introduces AirDrop, a useful feature designed to better combine everyday usability with data privacy. The PIN-based connection allows devices to be made visible more easily and for longer periods without compromising security. This offers significant added value, especially in professional contexts or for recurring data exchange. While details may change in future betas, the direction is already clear: AirDrop will become more flexible, more controllable, and remain easy to use.
