2026 will be one of the most extensive Mac years since the launch of Apple's Silicon strategy. Nearly every Mac line will receive an update, and both the M5 and M6 will mark a new era for performance, energy efficiency, and display technology. The range of planned models extends from the affordable entry-level MacBook to the redesigned MacBook Pro with OLED. New displays, an updated Mac mini, and a powerful Mac Studio are also on the way.

With the transition to its own chips, Apple laid the foundation for a faster and more flexible upgrade cycle. 2026 will show how consistently this strategy is being pursued. The M5 and M6 chips will take center stage, forming the basis for a broad modernization of the entire Mac family. In addition to internal updates, developments in panels, enclosures, and connectivity are also evident. This year could become the strongest upgrade cycle yet in the Apple Silicon era.

Widespread rollout of the M5

The M5 processor will be found in almost all new Macs in 2026. Apple plans to use it in the MacBook Air, Mac mini, and Mac Studio. At the same time, development of the M6 is underway, which could appear in the first devices as early as the end of this year or later.

MacBook Air early 2026

The MacBook Air is among the first Macs to be updated. It will receive the M5 processor, which Apple has already introduced in the 14-inch MacBook Pro. It could also be equipped with the same faster SSDs already used in the M5 MacBook Pro models. This will allow the Air to remain a lightweight, energy-efficient device while simultaneously gaining significant performance reserves.

New affordable MacBook

Apple will introduce a budget-friendly MacBook in 2026, positioned below the MacBook Air. It will feature a roughly 13-inch LCD display, without Mini LED backlighting or ProMotion. Inside, it will be powered by the A18 Pro chip, the same one found in the iPhone 16 Pro models. This chip is based on the second-generation 3-nanometer process, paired with 8GB of RAM and Apple Intelligence support. The entry-level model could be available in colors reminiscent of the iMac, including blue, pink, yellow, and silver. It is not intended to replace the MacBook Air, but rather to expand the product line at the lower end. The launch is planned for the first half of 2026.

MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max

Apple plans to update its higher-performance MacBook Pro models in early 2026. The M5 Pro and M5 Max variants will offer more CPU cores, more powerful GPUs, and faster SSDs. Both chips are expected to be available in the 14-inch and 16-inch models, clearly differentiating the offering above the standard M5.

New Mac displays in early to mid-2026

Apple hasn't released a new Studio Display since 2022, but two displays could appear in 2026. The next generation of the Studio Display is expected to be 27 inches again, but using Mini LED technology instead of LCD to deliver significantly brighter and higher-contrast images. It could be powered by the A19 Pro chip, which is also found in the iPhone 17 Pro. Apple is developing two display models. It's unclear whether there will be two sizes of the Studio Display, one Studio Display plus a more expensive successor to the Pro Display XDR, or two Studio Display variants, of which only one will ultimately be released.

Mac mini mid-2026

An updated Mac mini could be released in mid-2026. It is expected to be available in versions with the M5 and M5 Pro processors. There are currently no indications of a new design, so the focus is likely to be on internal upgrades.

Mac Studio Mid 2026

The Mac Studio is also expected to be redesigned mid-year. Because Apple didn't release the M4 Ultra, there was no corresponding Mac Studio model. A Mac Studio with the M5 Max and M5 Ultra is now expected to be released in 2026. The M5 Max offers significantly more CPU and GPU performance than the regular M5, while the M5 Ultra is likely to be the new top-of-the-line model. Further information about possible design changes is currently unavailable, so only internal improvements are likely.

OLED MacBook Pro with M6 late 2026

In addition to the MacBook Pro upgrade earlier this year, Apple is working on another model, expected to feature OLED display and the M6 chip. The timeframe is between late 2026 and early 2027, though 2026 remains a possibility. The OLED model is rumored to have a redesigned look, being thinner and lighter than current models and featuring a Mac touchscreen for the first time. The display is expected to integrate a punch-hole camera without a notch, increasing the usable screen area. The M6 chip could be based on TSMC's 2-nanometer process, delivering improvements in speed and efficiency. It could also see 5G connectivity in a MacBook for the first time, with an integrated Apple C2 modem supporting both mmWave and sub-6GHz. If this device does indeed appear in 2026, it would be the second MacBook Pro update in the same year, a rare occurrence for Apple.

Mac Pro timing unclear

The future of a new Mac Pro remains uncertain. Originally, a model with an M4 processor was planned for 2025, but this did not materialize. A release in 2026 or later is possible. However, it is not out of the question that Apple will abandon the device altogether, as was recently reported.

iMac: unclear status

An update for the iMac with the M5 processor is expected. The exact timing is unclear. There are no indications of design changes – but there are signs of a larger model.

Apple is ushering in the next phase of Mac development

2026 will see a major modernization push for Apple. The Mac family will receive new chips, new displays, an affordable entry-level model, and potentially the first combination of OLED, touchscreen, and M6 in the MacBook Pro. The transition to M5 and M6 will define the entire year, while new display and modem technologies will also be introduced. This makes 2026 one of the most important years for the current Apple Silicon generation.
