The AirPods Pro 3 have barely hit the market, and already the first rumors about the next model are circulating. According to recent reports, Apple could take several unusual steps with the upcoming generation of AirPods Pro. Besides potential new features, the focus is primarily on a strategic realignment that could change the current release schedule and structure of the product line.
In recent years, Apple has focused on consistency with its AirPods Pro. A new model was released every few years – each one a direct evolution of its predecessor. This could soon change. New information suggests that Apple intends to become more flexible with the AirPods Pro in the future. The next version is expected not only to be released earlier but also to feature a new product structure and adjusted pricing. Three areas are particularly important: the release date, the product range, and the price.
Apple could break with its release cycle
Until now, there have been roughly three years between AirPods Pro generations. The first version was released in 2019, the AirPods Pro 2 followed in 2022, and the AirPods Pro 3 appeared in 2025. However, rumors suggest that Apple plans to launch the next model as early as 2026 – likely in the fall. This would mark the first time the company has released two AirPods Pro versions within just two years. This would be a clear break with the established pattern and could indicate that Apple intends to align its development cycle with other product lines like the iPhone.
New structure for the product range
In addition to the revised timeline, there are indications of a shift in model strategy. Instead of a traditional fourth generation – AirPods Pro 4 – the new model is expected to be an enhanced version of the AirPods Pro 3. Bloomberg reports that Apple is currently working on a variant with integrated infrared cameras. These could enable new features related to Apple Intelligence. It's conceivable that the cameras could recognize head movements, gestures, or the environment, thus creating new interaction possibilities. This means that there could be two versions of the AirPods Pro 3 in the future: a standard model, as currently available, and a high-end variant with cameras. This would mark the first time Apple has introduced a differentiation for the Pro models similar to that of the AirPods 4, which are available in two versions – one with active noise cancellation and one without.
Price changes are likely
The new structure could also bring about a price shift. The current AirPods Pro 3 sell for €249. Rumors suggest the new model with cameras will be more expensive – presumably starting at €279 or even up to €299. This would mark the first time Apple has offered two price tiers within the same AirPods Pro generation. This differentiation could serve to make the more expensive models with exclusive features more appealing without removing the cheaper versions from the lineup.
Strategic realignment at Apple
The three expected changes—shorter product cycles, an expanded product lineup, and higher prices—suggest a clear strategic realignment. Apple appears to no longer view the AirPods Pro simply as headphones, but as part of a larger ecosystem that will be more closely integrated with Apple Intelligence and other smart services. If the rumors are true, the AirPods Pro line is evolving into a product that transcends audio capabilities and is increasingly embedded in Apple's vision of intelligent, context-aware technology.
How Apple could reposition the AirPods Pro
The potential changes to the AirPods Pro indicate that Apple intends to take a new direction with this product line. An earlier release, a split model range, and a higher price could fundamentally alter the AirPods Pro in the long run. Should the model with IR cameras actually be released, it would not only represent a technical upgrade but also signal Apple's intention to position the AirPods more strongly as intelligent everyday companions. 2026 could therefore be a pivotal year for the further development of the AirPods Pro line—and an indication of how Apple plans to position its wearables in the future.
