iPhone Fold: Everything about Apple's foldable smartphone of 2026

The iPhone Fold is one of the most exciting projects Apple is currently working on. After years of rumors and concept ideas, its market launch now seems to be drawing ever closer. Various analysts and industry insiders predict that Apple will release its first foldable iPhone in 2026. The device is expected to combine technological innovation with typical Apple design and introduce a new device category within the iPhone lineup.

Foldable smartphones are now available from several manufacturers, but Apple has taken its time. While Samsung, Huawei, and Google have long since sold multiple generations of their foldable devices, Apple has remained silent. The reason apparently lies in the company's desire to launch a product only when design, technology, and user experience are perfectly aligned. Now, evidence is mounting that this point has been reached – and the iPhone Fold will be released in 2026.

The overall design

The iPhone Fold's design is based on a book-like form factor rather than a clamshell mechanism, making it similar to the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold. When folded, the device is expected to be between 9 and 9.5 millimeters thick, while when unfolded, it will be only between 4.5 and 4.8 millimeters thick. A leaker from China, known as Instant Digital, recently confirmed that the thickness when unfolded will be at least 4.8 millimeters.

The display sizes

The iPhone Fold will have two displays. On the outside is a 5.5-inch screen that functions like a regular iPhone display. When the device is unfolded, a 7.8-inch inner screen is revealed – almost as large as a small iPad. To prevent visible creases in the display, Apple is said to be installing a metal plate beneath the flexible surface, which distributes the stresses created when the device is folded. This should make the screen appear virtually crease-free. Rumors suggest the inner display will have a resolution of 2,713 x 1,920 pixels, while the outer display will have a resolution of 2,088 x 1,422 pixels.

Housing and hinge

The iPhone Fold's casing is expected to be made of titanium. The hinge is a combination of titanium and stainless steel, utilizing liquid metal produced through a die-casting process. This choice of material is intended to address two common problems with foldable devices: hinge fragility and screen creasing. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo believes this will significantly improve durability for Apple. Jeff Pu, however, suggests that aluminum could also be used. Sources agree, though, that the frame is designed for stability and longevity.

The camera system

Apple will apparently use a four-lens camera system. Two main cameras on the back are expected to each offer 48 megapixels. These will be complemented by a front-facing camera and an additional camera inside the device. The inner display is said to contain an under-display camera (USC), while the outer camera will be integrated in a punch-hole design. This leaves the inner screen completely unobstructed. The front camera will function in both the folded and unfolded positions.

The authentication

Instead of Face ID, the iPhone Fold will reportedly feature a Touch ID sensor integrated into the side button. This solution saves space and fits better into the compact design. Apple has already successfully implemented this system in several iPads, including the iPad Air and the iPad mini.

The mobile connection

The foldable iPhone is expected to be equipped with Apple's own C2 modem, the second generation of its in-house cellular chips. This continues Apple's move away from Qualcomm modems. The device will support 5G, including mmWave, and according to current information, will no longer have a physical SIM card slot. Instead, Apple will rely entirely on eSIM.

Battery life and energy efficiency

Apple places great emphasis on energy efficiency with the iPhone Fold. More compact components, especially in the display driver, create more space for high-density battery cells. These are intended to provide longer battery life without increasing the device's thickness. The new C2 modem further contributes to energy savings while simultaneously enabling faster connections.

The color options

Currently, only two color options are being tested – black and white. This decision aligns with Apple's minimalist design philosophy. Whether additional colors will be added before the market launch remains to be seen.

The price

The iPhone Fold will be positioned in the premium segment. According to several reports, the price will range between $2,000 and $2,500. Some analysts estimate that Apple could lower the entry-level price to around $1,800 to $2,000, depending on production costs and features. A crucial factor is the hinge: its manufacturing costs are expected to be significantly lower than initially anticipated thanks to optimized design and Foxconn's production processes. Whether Apple will pass these savings on to customers or aim for higher margins remains unclear. What is certain, however, is that the iPhone Fold is likely to be the most expensive iPhone ever.

The market launch

According to analyst Jeff Pu, the device reached the "New Product Introduction" (NPI) phase at Foxconn in March 2025. This means it is close to mass production. Mass production is expected to begin in the fourth quarter of 2026. Bloomberg's industry expert Mark Gurman anticipates a launch in the fall of that year. However, Japan's Mizuho Bank considers a delay to 2027 possible if Apple were to revise design decisions, such as the hinge.

The iPhone Fold as a symbol of Apple's innovation strategy

The iPhone Fold could become Apple's most important device in years. With a titanium frame, a virtually crease-free display, four cameras, and its own cellular chip, Apple is bringing numerous innovations to a completely new format. The high price clearly indicates that the device is being positioned as a luxury product. Should Apple deliver the expected quality and durability, the foldable will likely set new standards not only for fans but also for the entire industry. 2026 could thus be the year that Apple redefines the smartphone – with the iPhone Fold.
