iPhone Fold: Why the outer display is much smaller

The iPhone Fold is one of the most discussed Apple products, even though it hasn't been officially announced yet. New reports suggest that Apple's first foldable iPhone could be significantly more compact than many previously assumed. The size of the outer display, in particular, is attracting attention because it deviates from the current trend for foldable devices. This decision appears to be based on a clearly defined design and usage strategy.

Foldable smartphones have become established, but Apple is a relatively late entrant to this market. This is precisely why the company is expected not to simply adopt existing concepts. Current information suggests that the iPhone Fold is not primarily intended as a traditional smartphone, but rather as a device with a clear focus on its unfolded state. The rumored dimensions provide important clues in this regard.

Compact outdoor screen as a starting point

According to a report by The Information, the iPhone Fold will have a 5.3-inch external display when closed. This would be smaller than the 5.4-inch display of the previous iPhone mini, whose product line Apple discontinued in 2022. This information has surprised many observers, as Apple would not normally expect any compromises in everyday usability with a completely new and very expensive device.

Based on these dimensions, content creator Ben Gaskin has published models and videos of a printed version of the device. These are intended to show how the iPhone Fold might feel in the hand. At the same time, they illustrate that the size of the outer display is not arbitrary, but rather the result of a fundamental compromise between the outer and inner screen sizes.

The ratio between the outer and inner display

With book-format foldables, the shape of the inner display depends heavily on the design of the outer display. A narrow, tall screen on the outside usually results in a more square inner screen when unfolded. This is only suitable to a limited extent for videos or multitasking with two windows side by side.

A more rectangular internal display, on the other hand, is significantly better suited for productive work. It allows for more practical layouts for split view and similar functions. The disadvantage is that the external display must either be wider or smaller overall. Both compromise the classic smartphone feel when closed.

Indications of a 4:3 internal display

Several reports indicate that Apple is planning an aspect ratio of approximately 4:3 for the inner display of the iPhone Fold. This format is familiar from iPads and offers clear advantages for multitasking and app display. Such a display would make it easier for Apple to transfer existing iPadOS features to a foldable device.

This makes it clear that the unfolded state is intended as the primary usage mode for the iPhone Fold. The device is meant to be less of a stretched smartphone and more of a lightweight, ultraportable tablet that can be folded. This usage concept therefore differs noticeably from many current foldable devices.

Differentiation from other foldable smartphones

Compared to other devices on the market, the iPhone Fold is significantly smaller when closed. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 has a 6.5-inch front display, while the Google Pixel Pro Fold measures 6.3 inches. At 5.3 inches, the iPhone Fold would be smaller than almost all current large foldable phones.

These differences show that Apple doesn't view the external display mode as a full-fledged smartphone replacement. While other manufacturers treat the cover display as the primary screen, Apple seems to see this mode more for short, fleeting interactions. These include notifications, quick replies, or simple actions on the go.

Limitations of software and high expectations

Even though Apple has a lot of experience with user interfaces, software can only compensate for the physical size of a display to a limited extent. Anyone who wants to write longer texts, browse the web intensively, or use many third-party apps while the phone is folded will inevitably reach its limits. That's precisely why the comparison with the iPhone mini is so striking.

This aspect is particularly relevant given the expected price. The iPhone Fold is reportedly set to cost between $2,000 and $2,500, making it the most expensive iPhone ever. At this price point, many expect an uncompromising user experience, even when folded.

Apple is clearly focusing on the unfolded mode for the iPhone Fold

The rumored dimensions of the iPhone Fold clearly indicate that Apple sees the greatest added value in its unfolded state. A smaller, less conventional outer display is being deliberately accepted in order to enable a powerful, versatile inner display. The design looks less like a large iPhone and more like an iPad that can be folded.

Viewed from this perspective, the compromises made with the iPhone Fold become much more understandable and typical of Apple's product philosophy. The market launch is currently expected in September 2026, alongside the iPhone 18 Pro models. Whether this concept succeeds ultimately depends on how users embrace the focus on the unfolded mode.
