With iOS 26.3, the first iPhone update of the new year is on its way. Apple has already released the first beta version, giving a fairly clear indication of the release schedule. As in previous years, this update will very likely follow a set pattern. A look at earlier iOS versions reveals quite precisely when iOS 26.3 is expected to be released to all users and which changes have already been confirmed.

Apple is known for rolling out software updates on a recurring schedule. Especially with intermediate versions like iOS x.3, the release dates hardly vary. Therefore, the release date of iOS 26.3 can not only be roughly estimated, but narrowed down quite precisely. At the same time, the first beta shows that Apple is once again focusing on minor adjustments rather than major new features.

When will iOS 26.3 be released?

Everything points to iOS 26.3 being released at the end of January. The previous x.3 updates provide a clear indication of this:

  • iOS 18.3 was released on Monday, January 27th.
  • iOS 17.3 was released on Monday, January 22nd.
  • iOS 16.3 was released on Monday, January 23rd.

The intervals between the releases are minimal. A striking common pattern is also evident: all three updates came exactly one week after Martin Luther King Jr. Day.

This year, the holiday falls on January 26th. If Apple sticks to its previous strategy, this date is the most likely release date for iOS 26.3. Alternatively, a release on the following day of the same week is also possible. Significant deviations are considered rather unlikely.

Beta version and early access

iOS 26.3 is already available as a first beta. The update can be tested through Apple's public beta program before its official release. As is typical with x.3 versions, further beta versions are expected before the final version is released.

New features and changes in iOS 26.3

Major feature leaps are traditionally not part of the x.3 updates, and iOS 26.3 confirms this impression. The first beta so far brings three smaller, but noticeable changes.

Changes to the background image

The background image section has been redesigned for clarity. "Weather" will now be displayed separately from "Astronomy." New weather-based backgrounds have also been added to the gallery. While the content remains largely unchanged, the structure has been streamlined.

Android transfer option

A new feature is a special setting for switching from iOS to Android. This function is the result of a collaboration between Apple and Google and is designed to simplify data transfer from an iPhone to an Android device. Google is also working on a similar solution for users who want to switch from Android to an iPhone.

Forwarding of notifications within the EU

For users in the EU, iOS 26.3 brings a particularly relevant new feature. iPhone notifications can now be forwarded to wearables that are not Apple Watches. This extends a previously Apple Watch-exclusive function to smartwatches and wearables from third-party manufacturers.

Outlook on further betas

Currently, only a beta version of iOS 26.3 exists. Experience shows that Apple adds further minor features, optimizations, or bug fixes in later betas. Whether additional visible new features will follow is uncertain, but not impossible.

iOS 26.3 as a typical New Year's update

iOS 26.3 is expected to be released at the end of January, following the release pattern of recent years. The update is relatively minor in terms of content, but delivers some useful improvements. The new Android data transfer option and the expanded notification forwarding in the EU are particularly noteworthy. iOS 26.3 is therefore not a major game-changer, but rather a typical early-year update focusing on refinements and targeted adjustments.
