Apple recently unveiled the M5 iPad Pro, launching a new series. While the update was relatively minor, it offers clues about the next steps in Apple's iPad strategy. At the same time, rumors are intensifying about three key models expected to be released in 2026. The anticipated innovations range from chip upgrades and more powerful modems to the first major design changes.
The iPad family has undergone several redesigns in recent years. 2026 is shaping up to be a year primarily focused on hardware updates and standardization. Major leaps forward will be rare, but interesting developments are emerging within the model range. The update for the iPad mini is particularly exciting, while the iPad Air and the more affordable iPad will primarily receive technical upgrades. The following overview summarizes all known information and relevant rumors.
M4 iPad Air
The first major iPad update in 2026 is expected to be the new iPad Air with the M4 chip. The M4 offers a performance increase of approximately 10 to 20 percent compared to the M3. In addition, it will likely see a switch to Apple's own networking hardware. This means the N1 chip and C1X modem, which are already used in the M5 iPad Pro. This will make the iPad Air faster on cellular networks and enable Wi-Fi 7 support.
Aside from the internal upgrades, there's little concrete information about external changes. A 600-nit display, like the current 13-inch model, and new colors are possible but unconfirmed. A 90 or 120 Hz refresh rate would be beneficial but isn't actively discussed. OLED isn't expected for the iPad Air until 2027 or later.

A18 iPad
The entry-level iPad, officially priced at €379 but available on Amazon for €339, is slated to receive the A18 chip in 2026. This represents a significant performance upgrade, but it also brings a second benefit: for the first time, Apple Intelligence will run on the entry-level iPad. This brings the base model closer to many features previously reserved for more expensive devices.
Here too, a switch to the N1 chip and C1X modem is expected. This will make the connectivity more modern and faster. One frequently requested improvement concerns the accessories. The budget iPad currently uses the Magic Keyboard Folio. This only works well when placed on a table, as the stand requires support. A keyboard similar to the Magic Keyboard for the Air and Pro would be appropriate, but it's not part of the current rumors. The A18 iPad is expected to be released in the first half of 2026.

A19 iPad mini
The iPad mini will receive its most comprehensive upgrade in 2026. Following the last update in 2024, a major technological leap is now on the way. The new model is expected to feature the A19 Pro chip and, for the first time, an OLED display. This will bring OLED to the smallest iPad, after Apple introduced the technology in the iPad Pro in early 2024 and has been using it in the iPhone since 2017.
According to Bloomberg, the iPad mini is the next major device to switch entirely to OLED. It will also reportedly receive a more water-resistant design, giving the model a noticeable increase in durability. Since the mini hasn't been redesigned since 2021, this upgrade seems like a logical step as the current form factor celebrates its fifth anniversary.

Outlook for a quiet iPad year
2026 will be a relatively quiet year for the iPad lineup. The biggest updates will affect the iPad mini, while the iPad Air and the entry-level iPad will primarily receive chip and modem upgrades. Apple is clearly working towards a more unified technical foundation. Meanwhile, preparations are already underway for the next Pro generation. The M6 iPad Pro, expected in early 2027, is slated to feature a vapor chamber cooling system for the first time, offering more efficient heat dissipation. Until these major developments, the product range will remain stable and well-structured.
