Apple has begun internally organizing staff for its September keynote. A lottery system among employees of its US stores is intended to ensure on-site support in Cupertino. The likely date can be deduced from the deadlines of this process – even though Apple has not yet officially announced it to its own staff.

This autumn brings more than the usual Pro update: iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected, as well as the first foldable model, whose production line has been up and running since the end of July.

Apple has not yet revealed the exact date of the unveiling. A Bloomberg report about an internal program now provides the first reliable details.

Key Facts at a Glance

  • Apple is raffling off tickets to the keynote address on the Cupertino campus among employees of its US branches.
  • Internally, the first half of September was mentioned as a timeframe, but no specific date was given.
  • The application deadline is August 8th, and acceptance letters will be sent out on August 17th.
  • September 7th is a public holiday in the USA, which makes September 8th or 9th the likely date.
  • For viewers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland, such a keynote address traditionally begins at 7 pm CEST.

What's behind the lottery procedure

The program, called the Event Support Experience Program, is aimed at employees of Apple Stores in the United States. Those selected by lottery travel to the company headquarters and are responsible for managing press inquiries.

The tasks are organizational in nature: managing queues, checking in guests, directing traffic, welcoming visitors, and supporting the security teams. It's essentially the classic logistics of a live event with several hundred invited media representatives.

Employees who were already involved in the developer conference or the iPhone launch in 2025 are not eligible to participate. Apple is therefore deliberately distributing the places more broadly rather than to the same individuals.

German, Austrian and Swiss branches are not involved in the process – the program is explicitly limited to the US workforce.

What the deadlines reveal about the date

More interesting than the program itself is its schedule. It significantly narrows down the possible event date.

September 7th falls on Labor Day this year, the US holiday marking the end of summer. Apple typically allows visiting media representatives a day to arrive, which is why September 9th seems a particularly plausible alternative date.

None of this has been confirmed. Apple traditionally sends out official invitations about two weeks before the event – following this pattern, they would be expected at the end of August.

What the timeframe means for buyers here

A reliable pattern emerges from the past few years: Pre-orders usually start on the Friday after the keynote, with sales beginning a week later. For an event on September 9th, this would mean pre-orders starting on September 11th and a market launch around September 18th.

The foldable model could be an exception. Several reports suggest that sales might start later than the unveiling – for a first product with limited production capacity, this wouldn't be unusual.

Anyone already considering an upgrade now has a concrete timeframe. A purchase in August is only worthwhile with a significant discount; a comparison of the iPhone 17, iPhone Air, and iPhone 17e will clarify which model in the current lineup best suits which needs.

Why Apple is revaluing in-person events

The effort involved is remarkable. A keynote address that's already being broadcast as a pre-recorded video wouldn't require reception staff from all over the country. The fact that Apple is flying in store employees instead of keeping the event streamlined speaks volumes about the importance of this occasion.

This fits in with the evening's program. With the first foldable iPhone, a form factor change is imminent, which Apple is unlikely to cover in a purely video-based presentation – the press is meant to get their hands on the device. The anticipated price increases of up to $300 further support the idea of prioritizing personal experience over the numbers.

This means that expectations are high: this September will be no routine event. What has been gathered so far about the iPhone 18 Pro and the iPhone Ultra points to the most comprehensive iPhone launch in years. (Image: Apple)
