Apple in January 2026: These products and updates are coming

January isn't traditionally Apple's main product launch month. However, for 2026, the start of the year appears to be significantly more active than usual. Internal plans and reliable reports suggest that Apple could unveil more than 20 new products throughout the year. January could mark the first major milestone, both in terms of new hardware and software updates.

Apple already introduced the M5 chip in the fall, albeit only in select devices. Several product lines are still awaiting their update. At the same time, Apple is working on a strategically important new addition to its Mac portfolio, as well as software updates primarily aimed at implementing regulatory requirements in the EU. Taken together, this makes for a month that may seem less spectacular than a typical fall event, but is nonetheless packed with significant content.

Mac hardware in January

MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and M5 Max

In October, the 14-inch MacBook Pro with the regular M5 chip was introduced. The more powerful variants with the M5 Pro and M5 Max were still missing. These models are now expected to follow. Both 14-inch and 16-inch versions with significantly more processing power are anticipated. Aside from the new chips, no major changes are planned. The design, display, and ports are expected to remain unchanged. A comprehensive redesign of the MacBook Pro is not expected until late 2025 or early 2026.

New MacBook with A18 Pro

In parallel, Apple is working on a new MacBook category that will be significantly cheaper than current models. This MacBook could be unveiled as early as January. It is expected to use the A18 Pro, the same chip found in the iPhone 16 Pro. This would mark the first time Apple has used an iPhone-class processor in a Mac. The plan is for a device with a 12.9-inch display and a starting price well under $1,000. Possible case colors include silver, blue, pink, and yellow. This model is clearly aimed at users looking for an affordable entry into the Mac ecosystem.

More hardware is planned

In addition to the devices potentially released in January, Apple has planned further hardware for the coming months. A MacBook Air with an M5 chip, a new iPad Air, and an updated entry-level iPad are expected in the first quarter. Historically, Apple has been known to unveil these products in March. A new Mac mini and a new Mac Studio are also in development for mid-year. The iPhone 17e is considered a likely February release. Furthermore, new AirTags and an updated Apple TV have been generating discussion for some time. Both products are considered overdue, but a concrete release date remains unclear.

Software updates in January

iOS 26.3

January is also significant on the software front. iOS 26.3 is already in beta and is expected to be released to all users sometime this month. While not a major feature update, it does include some important changes. A new interoperability system makes switching between iPhone and Android easier and simplifies data transfer. In the European Union, Apple is also implementing further regulatory adjustments. These include notification forwarding and improvements to proximity pairing for third-party accessories such as smartwatches and headphones. A look at previous versions shows that this timeframe is realistic. iOS 18.3 was released on January 27th, and iOS 17.3 on January 22nd.

Further system updates

In addition to iOS 26.3, Apple is planning further updates for its platforms:

  • macOS 26.3
  • iPadOS 26.3
  • tvOS 26.3
  • watchOS 26.3
  • visionOS 26.3

These updates primarily focus on bug fixes, security adjustments, and performance improvements. New features are not the main focus.

Apple's start to the year sets initial strategic priorities

January could prove to be a quiet but strategically important start to 2026 for Apple. New Mac models, a strategically new MacBook category, and several software updates are setting the tone early on. Even though many major product launches aren't expected until the following months, it's already clear that Apple is preparing for an exceptionally packed year of products.
