The iPad mini 8 is emerging as one of the most exciting Apple updates of the coming years. The compact tablet is expected to receive several fundamental innovations that will significantly elevate it technically and functionally above the current model. With OLED display, a new chip, a water-resistant casing, and a redesigned speaker system, it will be a device that clearly distinguishes itself from the seventh generation.
With the iPad mini 8, Apple aims to bring modern technologies from the larger iPad and iPhone models to a smaller format. The upcoming generation is intended not only to be faster but also more robust and deliver improved image quality. The key facts paint a picture of where Apple is developing the iPad mini in the future.
OLED display as the central innovation
The iPad mini 8 is expected to feature an OLED display for the first time. This will replace the current Liquid Retina LCD, which is also used in the iPad Air. OLED offers significant advantages. Higher contrast, true blacks, wider viewing angles, faster response times, and improved energy efficiency noticeably enhance the display. Apple already uses OLED in the Apple Watch, iPhone, and, since 2024, in the iPad Pro. Now, the technology is expected to migrate to other product lines, making the iPad mini 8 one of the next devices to undergo this transition.
A19 Pro chip for more speed
The new A19 Pro chip is expected to power the iPad mini 8. Evidence of this surfaced in accidentally released Apple code. This chip is also found in the iPhone Air and the iPhone 17 Pro series. The version expected for the iPad mini 8 features a five-core GPU, similar to the variant used in the iPhone Air. The current iPad mini uses a customized A17 Pro variant from the iPhone 15 Pro. The new model will therefore receive a significant performance boost and benefit more from Apple Intelligence features.
Waterproof design for greater everyday safety
For the first time, an iPad is set to receive an official water resistance rating. According to reports, Apple is developing a redesigned casing for the iPad mini 8, modeled on the robustness of the iPhone. The exact IP rating the device will receive is not yet known. The goal is water resistance that allows for occasional use in humid environments. This would make the device suitable for places like bathrooms, kitchens, or pool areas without water immediately posing a risk.
Revised speaker system without openings
To improve water resistance, Apple is planning a new speaker system. It will be based on vibration technology and will do away with traditional speaker openings. Openings are among the most vulnerable points for water ingress. Eliminating them increases resistance to moisture. Currently, Apple protects the openings in the iPhone using adhesive and seals. For the iPad mini 8, a different technical concept will be used, resulting in a more closed design overall.
Publication period and possible price development
A precise release date for the iPad mini 8 has not yet been announced. The most likely timeframe is currently the first half of 2026, coinciding with the release of new iPad Air models. Due to the OLED display, the new chip, water resistance, and the new speaker system, the device is expected to be more expensive. A price increase of up to €100 seems realistic. The current model starts at €549 – therefore, a price of €649 is a realistic expectation.
Why the iPad mini 8 is a real upgrade
The iPad mini 8 brings four key changes that significantly enhance the small tablet. OLED provides better image quality, the A19 Pro chip boosts performance, the more water-resistant casing expands its usability, and the new speaker system addresses weaknesses. With these changes, Apple is further developing the mini series and preparing it for a level previously reserved for larger models. This move demonstrates that the iPad mini will continue to play an important role in the product portfolio.
