macOS 27 provides three clues about the MacBook Ultra

Apple has unveiled the next generation of its Mac operating system with macOS 27 Golden Gate – and hidden within it three clues that point to the long-awaited "MacBook Ultra". Most striking is what the new features prepare for: a touchscreen and Dynamic Island.

The "MacBook Ultra" is the unofficial name for a new high-end model positioned above the MacBook Pro. Rumors suggest it will be the first MacBook with an OLED display, touchscreen functionality, a Dynamic Island architecture, a thinner enclosure, and the M6 Pro and M6 Max chips – a device that, with its planned OLED displays, would break with all previous Macs both visually and technically. macOS 27 now contains three indicators, primarily focused on touch functionality and the Dynamic Island. While individually minor features, together they form a pattern.

Touch input for Sidecar

The first clue concerns Sidecar, the feature that allows an iPad to be used as a second screen for a Mac. With macOS 27, Apple is adding direct touch input: users can now tap and interact with macOS elements on the iPad. This strongly suggests that Apple is preparing true touchscreen support for macOS – after years of resisting touch displays on the Mac.

Pull-to-Refresh is coming to the Mac

Secondly, macOS 27 brings a pull-to-refresh gesture, familiar from the iPhone, to the Mac. Swiping down on the trackpad refreshes pages or visible content in apps like Safari, Mail, News, Podcasts, and Calendar. Apple's decision to extend this gesture to the Mac now could also be interpreted as preparation for a MacBook Ultra with a touchscreen, where such a swipe gesture directly on the display would be a logical choice.

An interface perfectly suited for a Dynamic Island

The third clue lies in the new "Search or Ask" feature, powered by the revamped Siri and fully integrated into Spotlight in macOS 27. It appears as a dark, pill-shaped interface - a design that would perfectly complement a MacBook display with a Dynamic Island. On a MacBook Ultra, the "Search or Ask" interface would likely be positioned higher, surrounding the Dynamic Island as soon as it becomes visible.

What is known about the MacBook Ultra

In summary, the three features seem less like a coincidence and more like a gradual preparation of the system for new hardware. The MacBook Ultra is not intended to replace the MacBook Pro, but rather to be an additional high-end model positioned above it. Besides the OLED panel and touch controls, a significantly slimmer design and the next generation of chips are considered key features, which can be traced in detail in the collection of all previous rumors about the MacBook Ultra. According to reports, the model is expected to launch in early 2027 – a timeline that would align with the current software foundation, which will be established with macOS 27.

Availability of macOS 27

macOS 27 is currently available as a developer beta. A public beta is expected in July, with the final version anticipated in September. Until then, the aforementioned features can be tested, but their full potential will likely only be realized with compatible hardware.

From software clue to the new MacBook

Hints in the operating system are not proof, and Apple often includes features for reasons unrelated to future hardware. However, it is striking that three independent innovations point in the same direction – towards touch operation and a Dynamic Island on the Mac. Should the MacBook Ultra actually be released as described, Apple would have already laid the software groundwork for it with macOS 27. (Image: Shutterstock / Shahid Jamil)
