Before WWDC in June, almost every major detail of iOS 27 had already leaked – and Apple confirmed most of it on stage. However, five points from those same leaks have yet to appear in any beta version. Whether they will be included in the initial release or only in a subsequent update remains to be seen.
Apple unveiled iOS 27 on June 8, 2026, and released the first developer beta on the same day. Since then, four test versions have been released, most recently Beta 4 on July 20; Beta 5 is expected in early August. The feature set is thus largely predictable – with one exception: Several features that Mark Gurman described in his Bloomberg preview on June 5 are missing from all previous builds. This doesn't necessarily mean they're a no-go, as Apple regularly adds features with a point update. For three of the five points, the timing for users in Germany and Austria depends on a completely different issue anyway.
Chatbot selection in Siri currently only exists on paper
According to Gurman, Siri is set to open up to chatbots outside of OpenAI. Users will be able to switch between multiple providers in the search and question views; Apple has reportedly tested Claude and Gemini in addition to ChatGPT.
The interface for this is already built into iOS 27. However, currently only ChatGPT can be selected – the same connection already available under Apple Intelligence. The technical preparation is therefore evident, but the additional providers are not. A model selection with multiple AI providers was already apparent in May.
Images and texts should be able to use external AI models
Apple is expected to take the same approach with its generative features. Image Playground and the writing tools currently rely on ChatGPT; in the future, alternatives will be installable via the respective app from the App Store. The report also mentions Claude and Gemini as tested candidates.
There's no sign of this in the current beta. Image Playground and the writing tools continue to use Apple's own models and ChatGPT. Both openings likely share the same underlying technology and therefore appear together.
Health app awaits the streamlined AI features
The health app is set to receive a range of AI features that were originally part of a comprehensive coaching service. Internally, the project was codenamed Mulberry and has been significantly scaled back. According to reports, what remains are improved blood sugar tracking and the ability to monitor workouts via the device's camera.
Neither feature is planned for the initial release of iOS 27 – Apple might even showcase them at a completely different event than WWDC. The coaching service was already delayed in the spring, while the other Health features of iOS 27, from food logs to menopause functions, are proceeding as planned in beta.
The camera interface should be freely configurable
The camera app should be fully customizable: users should be able to decide for themselves which controls are located at the top. Gurman refers to these elements as widgets.
The app has indeed changed in iOS 27 – it now features a dedicated Siri mode capable of analyzing image content. However, the interface is not fully customizable. It's conceivable that Apple will only unlock this customization option when the new iPhone generation is unveiled, where it will serve as a stronger selling point.
Two apps side by side on the iPhone Ultra
The fifth point doesn't come from the WWDC preview, but from a Gurman report from March: iOS 27 is expected to bring true multitasking with two apps running side-by-side as soon as Apple's foldable model is on the market. Preparations are unmistakable, as a striking number of Apple apps in iOS 27 suddenly support landscape mode.
The timing therefore depends not on the software, but on the device. The side-by-side view on the iPhone Ultra has been one of the expected software features of the device since the beginning of June and fits into the previously known picture of the foldable, which is expected to launch in the fall.
Why two of these functions depend on the EU question
For iPhone and iPad users in Germany and Austria, the beta loophole isn't the decisive hurdle. Apple confirmed in its own newsroom on June 8th that Siri AI will not be released in the European Union at the launch of iOS 27 and iPadOS 27, and that other related features will also remain blocked for the time being. Craig Federighi justified this with the interoperability requirements of the Digital Markets Act; the Commission did not accept either Apple's technical proposal for an intermediary system service or a phased rollout over 18 months. A release date has not yet been set, even though Tim Cook spoke personally with EU Digital Commissioner Henna Virkkunen in early July. The reasons why the DMA is halting Siri AI on iPhone and iPad can be understood in detail by examining this dispute.
The chatbot switching feature is located precisely in the affected area. Remarkably, it would essentially fulfill Brussels' demand – opening up to competing assistant systems. However, Apple's model remains a curated selection within its own interface, while the Commission insists on equal technical access for competitors. The planned feature fails to resolve this very difference.
macOS 27, visionOS 27, and watchOS 27 are not affected: Siri AI is available in the EU on these versions. The chatbot selection could therefore arrive on Macs in Germany and Austria first, and only later on iPhones – an unusual order for Apple. Apple has not yet announced any EU restrictions regarding the generative features in Image Playground and the writing tools; the outcome here remains uncertain. Switzerland is not subject to the DMA and will receive Siri AI as usual – although, as everywhere else, the assistant will initially only launch in English. The list of features currently missing in the EU continues to grow with each system generation.
Apple's AI opening takes longer than the update itself
The core of iOS 27 is complete: The Assistant has been rebuilt, the interface redesigned, and Beta 5 will follow in early August. What's missing, ironically, is the very part that opens Apple's AI system to other providers. The fact that the interfaces for this are visibly laid out suggests that the work is well advanced – however, the release date for two of the five features will not be determined by the developers in Cupertino, but rather by the outcome of a regulatory dispute.
