While the third season is still airing, Apple TV has announced the series finale. Season four will premiere in summer 2027 and conclude the story. The announcement wasn't made via press release, but casually on stage in San Diego.

The appearance in Hall H at Comic-Con focused primarily on upcoming projects – most notably the first teaser for the Neuromancer TV series. However, amidst the announcements, a comment was made about a series currently airing. Showrunner Graham Yost stated on the panel that the fourth season would air in a year. Shortly afterward, Apple TV confirmed the timeframe on its X channel, adding a brief note: The end is near.

What was confirmed in San Diego

Season four will premiere in summer 2027 and will be the fourth and final season. Apple did not specify an exact date or even a month, leaving a window of approximately three months.

The information about the series finale isn't new: Apple already ordered seasons three and four together in December 2024 and announced at the time that the fourth season would conclude the story. What is new is the timeframe – and it's significantly earlier than the previous release schedule suggested.

The current third season continues to be released weekly, with the finale scheduled for September 4th.

Why the break will be shorter this time

A look at the previous distances makes the difference clear:

SeasonStartDistance to the previous
1May 5, 2023—
2November 15, 2024approximately 18 months
3July 3, 2026approximately 20 months
4Summer 2027approximately 12 months

The reason lies in the production schedule. Both final seasons were filmed back-to-back, and work on the fourth season was already completed at the beginning of March. This leaves only post-production, which, for a series with such elaborate sets and effects, accounts for the lion's share of the waiting time.

Apple is increasingly using this pattern. Even with Severance, where there was almost a three-year gap between the first and second seasons, the third season is expected to follow noticeably sooner. For a service with a relatively small catalog, this is more than just a footnote: those who subscribe solely for a single series reliably cancel their subscription after a two-year gap.

Three books, four seasons

The series is based on three novels by Hugh Howey: "Wool," "Shift," and "Dust." The first of these was adapted over two seasons, while the remaining two each get their own season. The finale thus follows the book's conclusion.

Rebecca Ferguson stars as Juliette Nichols and co-produces the series, which was developed by Graham Yost. Apple Studios and AMC Studios are behind the production. The setting is a 144-level underground structure inhabited by 10,000 people, while the surface is considered uninhabitable.

Apple's sci-fi catalog reaches its first conclusion

The finale concludes the service's first major genre series with a fully told story arc, rather than a cancellation. This remains the exception in the streaming business, especially for expensive science fiction productions.

The timeframe also allows for some flexibility: There are at least nine months between the season finale on September 4th and the start of the fourth season. Apple is not expected to announce a specific date until spring. (Image: Apple)
