Instead of a flood of new features, watchOS 27 primarily delivers refinements: Most changes improve speed, battery life, and accuracy under the hood. This is most evident in a single, but central, innovation – a dynamic app overview built around the new Siri.
watchOS 27 is one of the operating systems Apple unveiled at WWDC 2026, and it follows a pattern that runs through this year's entire software generation: few visible innovations, but a lot of refinement at the core. The most noticeable change to the user interface revolves around a new, dynamic app overview, at the center of which is the new Siri introduced at WWDC. However, the real focus lies beneath the surface, where Apple has worked on speed and efficiency in six different areas. Taken together, these improvements result in seven tangible enhancements for the Apple Watch.
The dynamic app overview
The most obvious new feature is a dynamic app overview that displays and rearranges five apps based on the current context and general usage. The new Siri app takes center stage. This overview appears immediately when you press the Digital Crown on your Apple Watch, regardless of whether you're currently using the grid or list view. If the dynamic overview can't find the app you're looking for, simply rotate the Digital Crown to switch to your preferred view.
This feature thus falls somewhere between a revamped navigation system and the efficiency-oriented development that characterizes the rest of watchOS 27: its primary goal is to get users to their desired app more quickly. It's arguably the most noticeable change in everyday use – the other improvements, by contrast, operate behind the scenes.
Six improvements beneath the surface
Apple says it has invested the majority of its work in the underlying platform. Specifically, the company cites six areas where watchOS 27 offers improvements:
- Improved battery efficiency
- Improved Wi-Fi connection
- More efficient water detection
- More accurate step counting
- Faster media playback
- Faster launch of app extensions
None of these improvements appear as standalone features in the menus, but collectively they are intended to make the Apple Watch run more smoothly and have a longer battery life. This aligns with the overall approach of this year's Apple systems, which focus less on new features and more on refining the existing platform.
Which Apple Watch supports watchOS 27?
As with the other software previews this week, the improvements only work with sufficiently recent hardware. watchOS 27 requires a paired iPhone 11 or later, or an iPhone SE (2nd generation or later) running iOS 27. Six watch models are supported: Apple Watch SE 3, Series 9, Series 10, Series 11, and Apple Watch Ultra 2 and Ultra 3.
This means that the Apple Watch Series 6, 7, and 8 are no longer supported, nor are the first Apple Watch Ultra and the second-generation SE. watchOS 27 thus joins a generational shift, with iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS Golden Gate also dropping support for older devices. The final version is expected to be released in the fall, as usual.
watchOS 27: An update you feel rather than see
watchOS 27 isn't an update that sells itself with a long list of features. Its value lies in the many small tweaks - from battery life and step counting to faster app access - that subtly enhance everyday use of the Apple Watch. Users of one of the supported models will likely notice the difference more than just see it. (Image: Shutterstock / Ringo Chiu)
