Apple is significantly expanding Apple Music with the next software generation: Song lyrics can now be translated and sung along to in more languages, AutoMix is coming to more devices, and Apple TV is seeing a significant improvement in sound quality. One of the new translation pairings is particularly interesting for German-speaking listeners.
As part of its service announcements at WWDC, Apple unveiled a whole host of new features that will be included in the system updates released this fall. A key focus is on Apple Music, which is being enhanced in several areas – from lyric translation and pronunciation assistance to improved audio quality on Apple TV. Many of these new features are tied to tvOS 27, the first developer beta of which can already be installed on compatible Apple TVs. The final versions will follow this fall along with the other system updates.
Song lyrics translation is coming to seven new language pairs
Apple is expanding its song lyrics translation service to include seven new language pairs. Song lyrics can now be translated from English to French, English to German, English to Italian, English to Korean, English to Spanish, as well as from French to English and from Japanese to English.
Apple uses machine learning for translation, which is further refined by language experts. According to Apple, the goal is to preserve the emotional impact, cultural nuances, and original intent of a text, rather than simply translating word for word.
Pronunciation aid expands the singing along by five pairs
In addition, the song lyric pronunciation function is being expanded, enabling users to sing along when the lyrics are in a foreign language. It now includes five additional pairings: Arabic to Romanized Arabic, English to Hangul, English to Katakana, Japanese to Hangul, and Mandarin Chinese (Simplified) to Katakana. This allows lyrics to be displayed in a familiar script, even if the original language is different.
AutoMix reaches Apple TV and HomePod
AutoMix is also getting an update. The feature, which seamlessly blends individual tracks, is set to deliver an even richer listening experience with improved and more immersive transitions. The most significant change is that AutoMix is no longer limited to specific devices: In the future, the feature will also be available on Apple TV running tvOS and on the HomePod.
Hi-Res Lossless audio is coming to Apple TV
Perhaps the biggest leap in sound quality concerns the Apple TV itself. Apple Music will now offer not only regular lossless audio, but also Hi-Res Lossless. Subscribers with compatible external speaker outputs can thus listen to their tracks in the highest quality and play studio-quality sound directly through the Apple TV 4K.
Until now, this wasn't possible: With tvOS 26, the Apple TV 4K only supported lossless Apple Music audio up to 24-bit/48kHz, while Hi-Res Lossless – everything above 48kHz up to 24-bit/192kHz – was excluded. The new software generation closes precisely this gap. Lossless refers to a compression method that preserves all the data of the original recording, thus potentially enabling an improved listening experience, although it's debatable how noticeable the difference actually is in everyday use. Which devices beyond the Apple TV are suitable for lossless playback in Apple Music still depends heavily on the specific output method and the required hardware.
Availability of new features
The first tvOS 27 Developer Beta is now available; registered developers can install it on a supported Apple TV via Settings → System → Software Update → Beta Updates. The general release of tvOS 27 will take place in the fall, alongside the other system versions. The new Apple Music features will be rolled out to all subscribers during the same period.
tvOS 27: More languages, higher sound quality
The new features demonstrate the direction Apple Music is taking: On the one hand, Apple is further opening up the service linguistically by making song lyrics understandable and singable across more language barriers. On the other hand, sound quality is becoming a greater focus – the Apple TV is evolving from a mere streaming receiver into a serious source of high-resolution audio for the living room, provided the appropriate speakers are connected.
