The MacBook Pro remains one of the most important work devices in Apple's portfolio. Users with high performance demands, in particular, regularly opt for the latest 14- and 16-inch models. However, it is currently apparent that the availability of many configurations is significantly limited. Those wishing to order a new MacBook Pro may, in some cases, face unusually long waiting times.
The Apple US online store is showing extended delivery times for numerous MacBook Pro models. Particularly high-performance versions are affected. This development raises questions, as it could indicate possible upcoming product updates.
Limited availability in the Apple Online Store
The supply situation for the MacBook Pro has deteriorated noticeably in recent weeks. In the US, buyers of certain configurations are facing waiting times of up to two months. While a few 14-inch and 16-inch models with the M4 Pro chip remain available without delay, the situation is quite different for other variants.
Long waiting times for M4 Max models
MacBook Pro models with the M4 Max chip are particularly affected. For many of these configurations, the Apple Online Store lists estimated delivery dates between February 6th and 24th. In some cases, the dates are even later.
In extreme cases, delivery will be significantly delayed. All custom-made 14-inch MacBook Pro models with a 16-core M4 Max chip and 128 GB of RAM are now expected to ship on March 17th. This means a waiting time of almost two months.
M5 chip in the entry-level model, delays for Pro and Max
The entry-level 14-inch MacBook Pro was updated with an M5 chip back in October. Despite this update, delivery times for models with M5 Pro and M5 Max chips remain long. These variants are in particularly high demand for professional applications, further exacerbating the situation.
Possible indications of an imminent update
There have been several recent indications that Apple might announce new MacBook Pro models soon. The extended delivery times could be a sign that existing models are being discontinued or that inventory is being deliberately reduced.
However, there is an alternative explanation. Persistent memory shortages could also be contributing to the delays. It is noticeable that configurations with large amounts of RAM are experiencing particularly long delivery times.
A look back at the past and important dates
A look at previous product cycles shows that Apple has already introduced new MacBook Pro models in January. Variants with M2 Pro and M2 Max chips were released in January 2023. A similar timeframe would therefore not be unusual.
In addition, several important dates are scheduled for the end of January. On Wednesday, January 28, Apple will launch a Creator Studio suite of creative apps. On Thursday, January 29, the next earnings call will follow, revealing the company's quarterly financial results. Such calls are often used to present new products or strategic outlooks.
MacBook Pro: Delays are becoming the norm for many configurations
The current supply situation for the MacBook Pro demonstrates just how strained the market is for high-performance Apple notebooks. Long waiting times of several weeks are now the norm for many configurations. Whether the delays are due to supply bottlenecks, high demand, or an upcoming model update remains unclear. What is certain, however, is that the MacBook Pro continues to be in high demand, even if patience is currently a key factor in the purchase process.
