Apple is undergoing a personnel change that primarily affects the company's environmental and social strategy. After 13 years with the company, its current head of environmental affairs, Lisa Jackson, is retiring. Apple has officially confirmed this move and has since removed Jackson from the company's leadership. This marks the end of a long period during which she significantly shaped Apple's sustainability goals and policy initiatives.
Lisa Jackson was a key figure at Apple when it came to environmental policy, social responsibility, and government engagement. She reported directly to Apple CEO Tim Cook and had a significant influence on strategic decisions for many years. Her departure therefore raises questions about Apple's future direction in these areas.
Lisa Jackson's role at Apple
Lisa Jackson served as Vice President of Environment, Policy, and Social Initiatives at Apple since 2013. In this role, she was responsible for Apple's renewable energy and energy efficiency programs, among other things. A key project of her work was the company's long-term climate goal.
Apple aims to become carbon neutral by 2030. This goal encompasses not only its own business operations, but also its entire manufacturing supply chain and the complete product lifecycle, including production, use, and recycling. Jackson played a crucial role in developing and implementing this strategy.
Progress in climate protection
Under Lisa Jackson's leadership, Apple reduced its global greenhouse gas emissions by more than 60 percent compared to 2015. This figure was specifically highlighted by Tim Cook and is considered proof that Apple has not only set environmental goals but also achieved measurable progress.
In addition to reducing emissions, Apple increasingly focused on clean energy sources and energy-efficient processes. Suppliers were also more closely integrated into the climate strategy to reduce emissions along the entire supply chain.
Social initiatives and government work
Jackson's responsibilities extended far beyond environmental issues. She also led Apple's initiative for racial equality and justice. In addition, she was responsible for the global government affairs team.
In this role, she worked with governments around the world, advocating for issues that Apple defines as core values. These included education, accessibility, privacy, and security. Tim Cook described her as a key strategic partner who represented Apple's interests to policymakers while simultaneously promoting the company's values.
Professional background before Apple
Before joining Apple, Lisa Jackson worked at the federal level. During President Barack Obama's first term, she served as administrator of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency. There, she gained extensive experience in environmental regulation and policy governance, which she later brought to Apple.
Reorganization after departure
Following Lisa Jackson's departure, Apple has announced a new internal structure for the affected areas. The environmental and social initiatives teams will now report to the company's Chief Operating Officer, Sabih Khan.
Oversight of the government affairs team will be transferred to Apple's General Counsel. No direct successor for Jackson's previous position has been announced. Responsibility will therefore remain distributed across multiple management levels.
Apple after Lisa Jackson: Structures remain, leadership changes
With Lisa Jackson's retirement, a defining era in Apple's environmental, social, and political engagement efforts comes to an end. Her work has yielded measurable results, particularly in climate protection and in positioning Apple with governments worldwide. For Apple, her departure marks an organizational transition, while the established goals and programs remain in place. (Image: Apple)
