Apple is testing Car Key with car manufacturers in real-world use

Apple continues to work on making the digital car key suitable for everyday use. A week-long test event is currently underway to examine how well the technical standard behind Apple Car Key performs in practice. The testing is not taking place in a laboratory, but rather in collaboration with major car manufacturers and technology companies. The central question is whether digital vehicle access is secure, reliable, and functions seamlessly across different manufacturers.

The technical foundation of Apple Car Key is not solely determined by Apple. The Car Connectivity Consortium (CCC) is responsible for the standard. This organization develops and manages the so-called Digital Key standard, which aims to enable secure vehicle access via smartphones and wearables. A key component of this work is the annual End-to-End Interoperability Plugfest, where real vehicles, devices, and software are brought together and rigorously tested.

Apple Car Key in practical testing

This year's Plugfest event is attracting numerous well-known companies from the automotive and tech industries. These include Apple, the BMW Group, General Motors, Hyundai Motor Company, Mercedes-Benz AG, Rivian Automotive, and the Volkswagen Group of America. Technology and testing service providers such as Google, Motorola Mobility, Accenture, DEKRA, Ellisys, AUMOVIO, and Marquardt are also participating.

The event brings these companies together specifically to test the interoperability of the CCC Digital Key. This is the global standard for secure, smart device-based vehicle access, on which Apple Car Key is also based.

Focus on version 4 and backward compatibility

This year, the focus of the tests is on version 4 of the Digital Key standard. At the same time, the continued compatibility with version 3 is also being checked. These parallel tests are important because many vehicles and devices are still at different stages of development and equipment.

According to the CCC, 115 vehicles and other products were successfully certified last year. A total of 15 major car manufacturers and smart device manufacturers are participating in the current tests. From the consortium's perspective, this represents a critical mass that will enable the widespread use of digital vehicle keys.

Digital keys as the new industry standard

The CCC anticipates that 2025 will mark a turning point for the entire industry. Digital keys are increasingly evolving from an early innovation to a standard feature. This assessment is also supported by the "2025 Future of Vehicle Connectivity Report".

According to this report, 97 percent of member companies state that vehicle access is extremely or very important to their business. This clearly demonstrates the strong growth in demand for standardized, secure, and compatible digital key solutions for all vehicles and devices.

Security, data protection and passive access

A key component of the Plugfest tests is the topics of safety, data protection, and reliability. Passive vehicle access, in particular, is playing an increasingly important role. More and more car manufacturers are supporting this feature.

In compatible vehicles, the car unlocks automatically when you approach it and Apple Car Key is installed on your iPhone or Apple Watch. No active action is required, neither unlocking the device nor opening an app. This seamless process is precisely the focus of the current tests.

Ongoing field tests demonstrate how seriously Apple and the participating manufacturers are taking the further development of Car Key. Through close collaboration within the Chaos Computer Club (CCC) and regular Plugfest events, digital vehicle access is systematically reviewed and improved. Security, data privacy, and seamless interoperability are clearly the top priorities. Digital car keys are thus on their way to becoming an integral part of modern vehicles. (Image: Apple)
