Apple is bringing the world's most popular football simulation to its subscription service – as a full version without ads or in-app purchases. The release date is remarkably close to the start of the new NFL season.
On August 6th, EA SPORTS Madden NFL 27 Arcade Edition will be released on Apple Arcade, developed specifically for the service and featuring the current NFL teams. The title joins a sports division that Apple has been systematically expanding for months – most recently, the catalog grew by nine games for June and July. With Madden, the licensed brand that has set the standard in American football for decades is now being added.
A complete Madden without ads or in-app purchases

Apple describes the Arcade Edition as a complete Madden game, free of ads and in-app purchases. It includes Franchise and Quick Play modes with dynamic player ratings based on real NFL performance. Franchise mode is powered by a weekly story engine: players take on the role of general manager, making roster decisions, managing finances, and working their way through a season with rotating storylines.
This is precisely what sets this offering apart from the usual model of mobile sports games, which generate revenue through card packs, in-game currency, and advertising. The price is the subscription itself – but this ensures that progress remains tied to gameplay skill, not willingness to pay. Controllers are supported on iPhone, iPad, Mac, and Apple TV.

Two more football titles followed
Also releasing on August 6th is Retro Bowl College+, a spin-off of the 8-bit classic where players take on the role of head coach of one of 250 college teams. On September 3rd, NFL Retro Bowl '27 kicks off a new season with a Gauntlet mode: Players must survive a 15-game winning streak with limited resources, choosing between safe opponents and riskier matches with higher rewards. Experience points and abilities are retained after a loss.
Updates for the existing sports team
Meanwhile, the existing titles continue to grow. NBA 2K26 Arcade Edition has received Tyrese Maxey as a new Paragon player, along with the 2016 to 2024 era for The Association mode. In PGA TOUR Pro Golf, Bear's Best Atlanta is playable as an additional course. On July 16, NFL Retro Bowl '26 will get a series of historic Super Bowl challenges that run through the Apple Games app.

In addition, Apple is testing a new entry-level model: For selected Arcade games, there are free intro versions in the App Store that can be tried out without a subscription – including PowerWash Simulator, Mini Motorways, Cooking Mama: Cuisine! and Play-Doh World.
How much the subscription costs in Germany and Austria
Apple Arcade costs €6.99 per month or €49.99 per year, which works out to about €4.17 per month. Anyone who buys a new iPhone, iPad, Apple TV, or Mac gets three months free. The service is also included in Apple One: €19.95 for individuals, €25.95 for the Family plan, and €34.95 for the Premium plan. One Arcade subscription covers up to six people via Family Sharing.
The start date is no coincidence
August 6th is just before the start of the NFL season – and in a market the league has been strategically cultivating for years. Since the first Munich game in 2022, the NFL has played in Frankfurt, again in Munich, and most recently in Berlin. It returns to the Allianz Arena on November 15, 2026, when the New England Patriots face the Detroit Lions. So, a German-speaking audience for Madden exists, and it's growing.
For Apple, the title is more than just access to a catalog. Arcade has long defined itself through family and indie games; with Madden, NBA 2K, and Football Manager, it now boasts a sports division that would otherwise have to be purchased individually on consoles. The real leverage lies not in the individual game, but in the calculation Apple is making with it. (Image: Apple)
