Apple has released a new firmware update for the AirPods Pro 3. The update arrives shortly before the expected release of iOS 26.3 and, as usual, is distributed automatically in the background. While such firmware updates may seem unspectacular at first glance, they are an integral part of the ongoing development of the AirPods Pro 3.
Firmware updates for AirPods rarely bring major announcements. Instead, Apple usually focuses on stability, bug fixes, and minor optimizations for interaction with iPhone, iPad, and Mac. The latest update for the AirPods Pro 3, now officially available, follows this pattern.
New firmware available for AirPods Pro 3
The latest firmware for the AirPods Pro 3 has the build number 8B34. It replaces the previous version 8B30, which was released shortly before the holidays. This is therefore a direct follow-up update that builds upon the existing software and further improves it.
Apple regularly releases new AirPods firmware. These updates typically include bug fixes, performance improvements, and occasionally new features. However, in the case of the current version, Apple has once again limited itself to the familiar, very general release notes.
No detailed release notes from Apple
As with previous AirPods firmware updates, Apple has only mentioned "bug fixes and other improvements." Specific details about individual changes or new features are not yet available. At the time of publication, Apple's official AirPods firmware website had not yet been updated with further details about version 8B34.
Firmware update only possible automatically
Manual installation of the new firmware for the AirPods Pro 3 is still not possible. Unlike iOS or macOS updates, the entire process runs automatically in the background as soon as certain conditions are met. Apple specifies clear requirements for this.
Requirements for the firmware update
Several conditions must be met in order for the new firmware 8B34 to be installed on the AirPods Pro 3:
- The iPhone, iPad or Mac used must be updated to the latest version of iOS, iPadOS or macOS and Bluetooth must be enabled.
- The AirPods Pro 3 must be connected to the respective device via Bluetooth.
- The connected device must be connected to a Wi-Fi network.
- The AirPods charging case must be connected to a power source.
- The AirPods must be in the charging case and the lid must remain closed. At the same time, the AirPods must be within Bluetooth range of the connected device.
- The update process takes at least 30 minutes.
- After opening the charging case lid, the connection can be re-established and the installed firmware version can be checked.
Only when all these conditions are met will the new firmware be installed automatically.
AirPods Pro 3 receive another maintenance update
With firmware version 8B34, the AirPods Pro 3 receive another maintenance update, primarily focused on stability and optimization. While Apple hasn't provided specific details, such updates ensure reliable long-term use and better compatibility with future software versions like iOS 26.3.
