Apple Creator Studio: Icons clearly indicate the subscription version

Apple has introduced Apple Creator Studio, a new subscription suite for professional creative software. Besides the price and features, one detail in particular sparked discussion: the new app icons. Many online reactions were critical, fearing that these icons would be forced upon all users of Apple's well-known professional apps. However, a look at an official Apple support document paints a more nuanced picture.

Apple Creator Studio is aimed at users who regularly use several professional Apple apps. Offered as a subscription, the suite bundles applications that would otherwise be purchased individually. At the same time, Apple is pursuing a new approach to managing both paid and subscription versions of the same software. The newly introduced app icons play a central role in this.

Apple Creator Studio and the new app icons

With the introduction of Apple Creator Studio, new, uniformly designed app icons were also unveiled. These icons differ significantly from the previous icons of well-known professional apps. Speculation quickly arose online that Apple might use these new icons generally for apps like Final Cut Pro or Logic Pro in the future.

However, Apple clarifies that this is not the case. The new icons are exclusively reserved for versions delivered via Apple Creator Studio. They serve as a visual identifier for the subscription versions of the apps.

Purchased versions will remain available

In an official support document, Apple explains that several professional apps will continue to be available as one-time purchases in the Mac App Store. These include:

  • Final Cut Pro
  • Motion
  • Compressor
  • Logic Pro
  • Main Stage
  • Pixelmator Pro

These apps can be used independently of the subscription. Those who have already purchased them retain full access to the paid versions. Apple explicitly states that these versions will continue to be supported.

Simultaneous installation of both versions

An important point is the ability to use both versions simultaneously. If one of the aforementioned apps is already purchased as a one-time purchase and you also have an Apple Creator Studio subscription, both versions can be installed on the same Mac.

To avoid confusion, Apple uses different app icons. The classic icons represent the paid versions, while the new icons clearly indicate the Apple Creator Studio versions. Functionally, they are separate installations that can coexist.

AI functions as a differentiating feature

Apple also uses Apple Creator Studio to selectively tie new AI features to subscriptions. Certain AI-based features are available exclusively in the subscription versions of the professional and productivity apps. Perpetual licensed versions will continue to receive updates and support, but will not include all new AI features.

Apple is pursuing a clear strategy with this. The subscription offers additional benefits without forcing existing users of the perpetual licensed versions to switch.

A new approach to Mac apps from Apple

The clear separation between paid and subscription versions via different app icons is a new approach for Apple on the Mac. Instead of technically replacing an app or reducing its functionality, Apple is focusing on transparency. Users can see at a glance which version is installed and from which source it originates.

Apple Creator Studio officially launches on January 28th, marking another step in the company's long-term subscription strategy.

Apple Creator Studio brings transparency to subscription and purchase versions

Apple Creator Studio demonstrates how Apple is integrating subscriptions into its existing software offerings without completely replacing traditional purchase models. The new app icons are not a general design change, but rather a deliberate marker for the subscription versions. Purchased versions remain available, installable, and supported. Apple is thus creating a clear separation, improved clarity, and additional incentives for subscriptions without restricting existing users. (Image: Apple)
